A touring caravan earns its name on the road: the losses that matter happen in a crosswind on the motorway, in hail in the mountains and on a campsite far from home.

Driving with a touring caravan is not the same as driving a car. The combination is long, sensitive to crosswinds and slow to respond; snaking that turns into a rollover is the classic loss picture and almost always causes heavy damage to the body and chassis. Whether that is covered depends on the type of own-damage cover, not on the liability cover of the towing car.
The second point is the distance from home. If you break down in France or Austria, the question is not only who pays for the repair, but also who recovers the caravan, where you sleep and how the outfit gets home. That sits in a separate assistance section and not in the own-damage cover. Without that section you are left with an unusable caravan at your own expense.
We compare the Nationale-Nederlanden touring caravan product with the rest of the market on the territorial scope, the maximum unbroken stay abroad and the way assistance and replacement accommodation are set up. If your caravan is in storage for most of the year, also read our page on caravan insurance through De Goudse.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with the trailer.
External causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Theft after forced entry, with the prescribed lock | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm damage on the pitch | Yes | Yes |
| Hail damage to roof and walls | Provided that | Yes |
| Collision damage while manoeuvring | No | Yes |
| Contents in the caravan or trailer | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damp, wear and deferred maintenance | No | No |
A trailer or caravan is not an independent motor vehicle and therefore has no insurance requirement of its own. Damage you cause to others with it falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle, as long as the combination is coupled (Article 2 WAM). Once the trailer is uncoupled and has come to a standstill, that cover no longer applies.
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
An outfit that starts to sway and ends up on its side causes damage to the body, the chassis and usually to the towing car as well. The liability cover on the car pays only for what you do to someone else. The damage to your own caravan falls solely under own-damage cover. Watch the noseweight and the load distribution too, because overloading is a standard exclusion.
A hailstorm in the mountains puts hundreds of dents in the roof and side walls and damages roof lights. Repair is labour-intensive and on older caravans quickly leads to a total loss. Third-party, fire and theft cover usually includes hail, but check whether roof lights, solar panels and roof-mounted air conditioning are covered, and whether a separate exclusion applies to damage that is purely cosmetic.
Recovery from a foreign motorway, replacement accommodation, the return journey for the occupants and transport of the caravan back to the Netherlands are not part of the own-damage cover. That requires an assistance section or a separate breakdown cover, with its own territorial scope. Check whether assistance also applies when it is not the caravan but the towing car that fails; the conditions often deal with that combination separately.
Almost always excluded are damage caused by overloading or a badly adjusted coupling, damage during hire to third parties, and permanent occupation or use as a fixed residence in one place. Damp penetration and wood rot are also outside the cover as gradual deterioration. Some conditions also limit the unbroken stay abroad. After that the own-damage cover lapses and only third-party liability remains.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
The territorial scope is stated on the policy and often matches that of the green card for the towing car. If you travel further, apply for an extension in advance. Watch the maximum unbroken stay abroad as well. If it is exceeded, the own-damage cover can lapse while you are still travelling.
Third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover usually include hail. The difficulty lies in the extent: on an older caravan, repair soon exceeds the value, after which it is written off. Check whether roof lights, solar panels and roof-mounted air conditioning are expressly included, and whether an exclusion applies to damage that only affects appearance and does not make the caravan unusable.
The assistance section deals with that, not the own-damage cover. It usually covers recovery, replacement accommodation, the return journey for the occupants and transport of the caravan back to the Netherlands. Without that section, those costs are yours. Check as well whether assistance applies when the towing car fails and there is nothing wrong with the caravan.
No. Above a certain total weight of the combination, a trailer licence is required. If you drive without the right entitlement, the insurer can refuse to pay and recover any injury compensation from you. Check the permitted weight of car and caravan together and allow for the load, because overloading is excluded as well.
