The most expensive caravan losses rarely happen on the campsite, but while driving, coupling and reversing.

As long as the caravan is coupled, it counts for liability purposes as part of the towing vehicle: the car's third-party liability cover meets the requirement in Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). That also has an unwelcome side. If the caravan damages your own car while snaking or jack-knifing, that is not damage to a third party and the third-party liability cover pays nothing. For that you need own-damage cover on the car or on the caravan.
The ASR caravan insurance covers the caravan itself, and the question there is whether the cover also applies while driving. Roof damage from a low headroom, a split side wall after jack-knifing and a damaged drawbar after a collision are typical driving losses. When manoeuvring with a mover or reversing into a pitch, there is the added point that you are operating the caravan yourself, so there is no other party.
Loading and coupling are not a detail. Driving above the permitted maximum mass, or with a combination for which your driving licence category is not sufficient, is a stand-alone exclusion. Report a loss as soon as you know about it. That follows from Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code. An open or covered trailer needs its own policy: see trailer insurance through ASR.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with the trailer.
External causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Theft after forced entry, with the prescribed lock | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm damage on the pitch | Yes | Yes |
| Hail damage to roof and walls | Provided that | Yes |
| Collision damage while manoeuvring | No | Yes |
| Contents in the caravan or trailer | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damp, wear and deferred maintenance | No | No |
A trailer or caravan is not an independent motor vehicle and therefore has no insurance requirement of its own. Damage you cause to others with it falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle, as long as the combination is coupled (Article 2 WAM). Once the trailer is uncoupled and has come to a standstill, that cover no longer applies.
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
A combination that starts to snake often ends with damage to both the caravan and the towing vehicle. The car's third-party liability cover pays only for other people's damage, not for your own car and not for your own caravan. Anyone driving without own-damage cover is left with two bills after such an incident. A stabiliser coupling reduces the risk, but does not replace the cover.
Reversing into a narrow pitch and using a mover cause most of the small losses: a post you catch, a damaged side wall or the neighbour's car. If a third party is involved while the caravan is uncoupled, liability runs through Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code and not through the motor policy. Check whether your caravan cover includes this kind of self-inflicted damage or only external causes.
The permitted maximum mass of the caravan and of the combination determines which driving licence category you need and how much you may take with you. Overloading or a badly distributed load increases the chance of snaking and counts as a stand-alone exclusion in the event of a claim. Weigh the loaded combination once. After an accident the insurer can have this established from the investigation at the scene.
Outside the cover: damage while the combination was loaded above the permitted maximum mass; driving with a licence category that is not sufficient for the combination; damage caused by a defective or poorly maintained coupling and drawbar; hiring the caravan out to third parties; damage to the contents carried during the journey, unless a separate section has been taken out for them; and taking part in manoeuvring competitions.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
No. As long as the caravan is coupled, it counts for liability purposes as part of the towing vehicle. Damage it causes to that same car is therefore not damage to a third party and falls outside the third-party liability cover. For that you need own-damage cover, either on the car or through the caravan policy.
The damage the caravan causes to others while it is still rolling falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Damage to the caravan itself comes from the own-damage cover. If it turns out that the coupling was not properly secured or that the breakaway cable was missing, the insurer can reject that own-damage claim for negligence.
That depends on the permitted maximum mass of the caravan and of the combination with your car. If you stay within the limits of your category, the licence you have is enough. If you drive a heavier combination without the right category, you are driving without authorisation, and that is a stand-alone ground for rejecting an own-damage claim.
Only if it has been declared. A mover is an accessory fitted afterwards, with a considerable value, and it is not part of the standard sum insured. Have it noted on the policy, as with a stabiliser coupling, solar panel or bicycle carrier. Without that entry, an own-damage claim will only pay for the caravan without accessories.
