Insuring an electric scooter & comparing premiums

Insure your electric scooter — with the expensive battery included in the cover. Third-party liability is required by law, and with third party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover you also cover theft and damage to your own e-scooter. We compare more than 30 Dutch insurers. Independent advice from Finass Verzekert — registered with the AFM (the Dutch financial markets authority) and affiliated to Kifid (the financial services complaints institute).

In brief

You insure an electric scooter largely as you would an ordinary light scooter or moped scooter, with one important difference: the battery represents a large part of the value. It is best included in the own-damage cover. As with any scooter, third-party liability insurance is required by law.

Whether your e-scooter has a blue plate (light scooter, 25 km/h) or a yellow one (moped scooter, 45 km/h) helps determine the premium and the helmet requirement. Because of the theft risk, third party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover is often sensible. At Finass Verzekert we compare several insurers with good EV conditions.

Pay attention to including the battery and charger in the cover, the level of cover chosen, good security (an ART-approved lock), where you live (theft risk) and the registration plate (blue or yellow). We advise you independently and arrange everything for you.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your moped insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What does insuring an electric scooter & the premium cover?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

The legally required basic cover. Third-party liability covers damage to others, but not damage to your own e-scooter, the battery or theft.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including where you are at fault and for damage to your own scooter, with the battery included. For an electric scooter this is the obvious choice.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • No-claims years: the most decisive factor
  • Make, model and list price
  • Cover and excess chosen
  • Annual mileage
  • Age of the regular driver
  • Postcode area

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is electric scooter insurance compulsory?

Yes. Every electric scooter must have at least third-party liability insurance by law. That covers damage to others. Riding without insurance is a criminal offence.

Is the battery of my e-scooter included in the cover?

Under own-damage cover (third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive) the battery is included. Because the battery represents a large part of the value, this matters. We make sure the battery and charger are stated in the policy.

Which cover should I choose for my electric scooter?

Third-party liability is the minimum. Because of the value of the battery and the theft risk, third party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover is often sensible. We compare the options for you.

Is theft of my e-scooter included in the cover?

Only with third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive cover. An approved ART lock is often a condition and reduces the premium. We make sure the cover is right.

What is the difference between a light scooter and a moped scooter?

A light scooter (snorscooter) has a blue plate and does 25 km/h. A moped scooter (bromscooter) has a yellow plate and does 45 km/h. The plate helps determine the premium and the helmet requirement. We insure both.

How is my e-scooter premium determined?

Mainly by the value of the battery and the make, where you live, the registration plate, the security, your age and your no-claims years. By comparing, you find the keenest premium.
