Insuring a car collection

With a collection, separate policies mean paying for cover you never use all at once. One collection policy works from how many are actually on the road.

In brief

A collection policy brings several cars together in one contract, with an agreed value for each car and a joint mileage. You pay for use, not for numbers.

The condition is almost always a a locked garage, a limited circle of drivers, and that only some of the cars are on the road at any one time.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your classic car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Car collection: what is covered?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

The basis of value

A valuation per car

Every car with its own agreed value.

  • Classic cars rise in value
  • Valid for three to five years
  • No market value
By use

Combined mileage

You pay according to how much is actually driven.

  • Total for the collection
  • Not per car
  • Limited use pays off
Acceptance

Storage

With a collection, security weighs heaviest.

  • Locked shed
  • Alarm and cameras
  • Often a condition

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Total valued amount
  • Number of cars
  • Storage and security
  • Joint annual mileage
  • Circle of drivers
  • Share of classics and exotics

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Where the valuation falls short

Classic cars and unusual models rise in value. Without a valuation you get market value, and that does them no justice.

Storage is decisive

With a collection, the security of the shed weighs more heavily than the owner's claims history.

Where the mileage becomes a problem

You agree a total number of miles for the whole collection rather than per car.

Adding and removing cars without a new policy

If you buy or sell a car, you amend the schedule rather than taking out a new policy. With a collection clause a new acquisition is often covered straight away up to an agreed amount, with notification afterwards. For a growing collection that is the practical advantage separate policies never offer.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

From how many cars is this worthwhile?

In reality from three to five, particularly if they are not all on the road at the same time.

Does every car have to be valued?

For payment at an agreed value, yes. For ordinary everyday cars, market value may be enough.

What if I buy a car?

You add it to the schedule. With a collection clause it is often covered straight away.

Does the storage weigh heavily?

Very. For a collection, a locked and protected shed is almost always a condition of acceptance.
