In brief
We act as broker for more than thirty insurers and look at which one suits best in each situation. Bovemij comes into the picture where the car comes from a motor dealer or where the handling of a claim matters more than a few euros' difference in premium. The choice follows from what cover you need. We have no interest in any one company.
The practical difference lies in the claims handling. Policies with a repair network work with repair in kind: you take the car to an approved firm, the insurer settles directly and on that route the excess is often lower or waived. If you choose your own repairer, a different excess usually applies and payment is based on an estimate. You can read how that process works under the claims process for car damage.
On a used or imported car, the valuation is the point to watch. A car with a foreign origin or a version that was not supplied in the Netherlands cannot simply be compared with a list price. Declare the actual version and the purchase invoice, and for an unusual car look at imported car insurance. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code remains the upper limit: what is paid is what you actually lose.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for
Four points that require attention on a car from a motor dealer.
Repair in kind or free choice
Read exactly which route the policy requires. With a compulsory network, damage is repaired quickly and without you paying up front, but you do not choose the workshop yourself. If you want to go to a franchised dealer, check whether that has consequences for the excess and whether original or equivalent parts are used.
Defects are not damage
An engine failure, a leaking head gasket or a faulty gearbox shortly after purchase is a question of sale with the seller and not an insured loss. Car insurance pays for external events, not for shortcomings in the goods supplied. A warranty or legal expenses cover is the appropriate route for that.
The value of a used car in a total loss
On a used car the market value almost always applies. That is determined on the basis of comparable cars offered at the time of the claim, not on what you once paid. So keep the purchase invoice, service invoices and photographs of the car's condition. That is your only supporting evidence if the adjusted value is disappointing.
What is excluded
Not covered are wear, deferred maintenance and design faults, damage during hire or carriage for payment, and damage arising while the driver is not entitled to drive. If you conceal a modified version or an odometer reading that does not match, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and reduce the payment.
What does your premium depend on?
- Value and version: on an import the actual specification determines the rate
- Year of manufacture and mileage: age affects repair costs and market value
- No-claims years: built up with earlier insurers
- The repair route chosen: network repair usually gives a lower excess
- Age of the driver: young drivers pay more and sometimes get a higher excess
- Additional cover: passenger, legal expenses or breakdown cover count separately
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| While reversing you damage your neighbour's car | Yes | Yes |
| In the same manoeuvre your own rear bumper is damaged | No | Yes |
| The head gasket on the used car you have just bought fails after three weeks | No | No |
| You have repairs carried out at the franchised dealer while the policy requires its own repair network | No | Provided that |
| Your car is damaged while you had lent it out for payment | No | No |
| A flying stone puts a chip in the windscreen on the motorway | No | Yes |
Car insurance pays for external events. What is wrong with the car itself is a matter with the seller.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Do I take out this insurance at the dealership or with you?
Both routes exist. On purchase a policy is often offered straight away. We can set it alongside other quotations so that you can see what you are comparing. In doing so, look not only at the premium, but at the basis of valuation, the excess and the repair conditions. Those three determine what you are left with at the moment things go wrong.
I have imported a car. What do I have to declare?
The actual version, the country of origin, the purchase price and whether modifications were made for Dutch type approval. Insurers work with catalogue data that can differ on an imported car. If the basis is wrong, the payment in a total loss is wrong too. On rare versions a valuation report is the safest route.
Does my cover continue if I have the car modified?
Only if you report it. Different wheels, sports suspension, chip tuning or an LPG installation change the value, the risk and sometimes the handling. Unreported modifications are a classic reason for argument after a claim, and modifications that increase power are not accepted by some companies. Ask before you place the order.
How quickly do I have to report a claim?
As soon as you reasonably can. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report as soon as you know of the loss and to provide all the information the insurer needs. With theft or vandalism that includes a report to the police. Do not wait until you have a quotation yourself; let the insurer first determine which repair route applies under your policy.
