Most Maseratis in the Netherlands are bought second-hand and some come from abroad; that makes the discussion here not about replacement value as new but about which valuation arrangement you get.

This make has a lively used car market. The Ghibli, Quattroporte, Levante, GranTurismo and the later models change hands often and are regularly bought as imports. That has a concrete consequence for your policy: a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement only applies where you are the first owner or take the car on within a short period after first registration. If you buy a used example, the insurer works in principle from the market value on a total loss.
For cars whose market value is hard to establish, or that are rare or unusually specified, an a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code is the answer. That is not only for classics: a well-documented modern example with a long list of options is often worth more than a price guide shows. We assess case by case whether a valuation is worthwhile or whether the cost does not justify the difference.
With an imported car there is also the administrative side. The insurer wants to know the status of the registration, when the car was first registered and whether there is a damage history abroad. An incorrect or incomplete declaration on those points affects the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and can lead to a limitation of the payout when you claim.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Replacement value as new arrangements are tied to first registration and to first ownership. If you buy a used example you fall outside them and, in the event of theft or a total loss, the insurer works from the value on the day of the event. That can be lower than what you paid. So when you take out the policy, ask specifically which valuation arrangement applies and from what date it is measured.
With a car of foreign origin the insurer wants to know the date of first registration, the registration status and any damage history. If you conceal that, even unintentionally, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim and reduce or refuse the payout. Have an imported example inspected in advance and keep the report: it is your evidence of the condition in which you bought the car.
Own-damage cover pays for damage from an external event after the start date. Defects the car already had at purchase, deferred maintenance and mechanical faults fall outside it, however expensive they are. On used cars that often hits the wallet: a transmission, an air suspension system or electronics giving out is a purchase risk and not an insured event. A pre-purchase inspection by a marque specialist is the only real protection here.
The longer a model has been out of production, the slower the supply of body and interior parts becomes and the more marque workshops disappear from the area. Check whether the policy allows free choice of workshop and what applies where delivery times are long: does the premium continue, is there a replacement vehicle and until when. On a car waiting months for parts, that arrangement matters more than a small difference in premium.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Not automatically. Replacement value as new and purchase price arrangements usually apply only to the first owner or within a short period after first registration. Beyond that, the market value at the time of the event applies, and that can differ from what you paid. If you want to close that gap, have the car valued and record the result in the policy as the insured value.
The date of first registration, the country of origin, the registration status in the Netherlands and any known damage history. Those details determine acceptance and the valuation arrangement. An incorrect or incomplete declaration falls under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and gives the insurer room under Article 7:930 DCC to reduce the payout. So supply the documents generously rather than sparingly.
No. A mechanical defect is not an external mishap and falls outside every own-damage cover, including comprehensive. The same applies to electronics, air suspension and engine damage through wear. Only where the defect results from a collision, fire or another covered event is it included. For mechanical risks there are separate warranty products, apart from the car insurance.
Sometimes it is. If the car has a rare specification, a long list of options or falls outside the usual price guides, a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code fixes the value in advance and prevents argument afterwards. On a common model with many transactions in the market, the difference often does not justify the cost. We work that out case by case.
