a.s.r. non-life insurance for private individuals

a.s.r.'s personal general insurance range is built up from separate sections on a single policy schedule. The question is not whether the package looks complete, but whether each section on its own gives the right cover.

In brief

A personal general insurance package bundles separate policies under one policy number: home contents, buildings, liability, car, legal expenses and travel. Bundling gives you an overview and usually a package discount, but it changes nothing about the cover: each section has its own conditions, its own sum insured, its own excess and its own exclusions.

That is precisely why claims come unstuck at the boundary between sections. Your phone falling out of your coat pocket on holiday is not home contents damage at home but a matter for the travel or valuables cover. Water from a burst pipe is buildings damage for the repair of the pipe and home contents damage for the floor covering. Damage your child causes at someone else's house is liability. The same incident affecting your own belongings is not.

With home contents cover, pay attention to underinsurance: if the sum insured has been set too low, even a small loss is paid proportionately. A contents value calculator or a valuation prevents that. For jewellery, art and collections there is almost always a sub-limit; if you want to insure these in full, a valuables insurance the appropriate route.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four points on which a package policy works out differently from what people expect.

Sub-limits within a section

Within the home contents cover, lower maximums apply to jewellery, audiovisual equipment, cash and items in a shed, outbuilding or on the balcony. The total sum insured therefore says little about what you receive for a specific loss. Check those partial amounts before you sign and increase them where necessary with additional cover.

The care, custody and control exclusion in liability cover

Damage to property in your care is excluded on virtually every liability policy: your neighbour's borrowed tools, the hired trailer, your employer's laptop. Some policies make a limited exception for a place where you are staying or a holiday home you have rented. This differs from company to company and it is one of the points on which we compare.

Waiting period and pre-existing events in legal expenses cover

A legal expenses section carries a waiting period of several months and covers no disputes arising from an event before the start date. If you take out cover because a conflict is already running, there is no cover. Tax and business disputes also fall outside a personal section.

Reporting changes

Renovating, letting through a rental platform, starting a business at home or installing solar panels changes the risk. If you fail to report this, the insurer may invoke Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and reduce the payout. During a renovation, part of the risk also shifts to the contractor and their insurance.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of sections in the package: the discount usually rises with the number of covers
  • Rebuild value and contents value: the basis for buildings and contents
  • Postcode: burglary, water and storm risk differ by area
  • Excess per section: can be chosen differently for each cover
  • Security of the home: certified locks and fittings count towards it
  • Claims history of the household: previous claims count towards acceptance and premium

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a package cheaper than separate policies?

Usually yes, because of the package discount and a single set of paperwork. The benefit disappears as soon as one section gives too little cover and you only notice when you claim. So we compare section by section and set the outcome against separate policies with other companies. Sometimes the package wins, sometimes a combination does.

What happens if I want to cancel one section?

As a rule, sections can be cancelled separately at the contract renewal date or, after the first year, with a short notice period. Bear in mind that the package discount on the remaining sections may then fall. Do not cancel anything before the replacement cover has been definitively accepted, or you will be left uninsured in the meantime.

Does home contents insurance cover my belongings away from home?

Only to a limited extent. Most policies provide temporary cover for contents elsewhere, often only against named events such as fire and theft following forced entry, and with a lower maximum. Loss of or damage to luggage while travelling belongs on the travel cover. For valuable items you regularly take with you, valuables insurance is the watertight solution.

As a tenant, am I liable for damage to the property?

For damage you cause yourself to the rented property, yes, for example fire or water damage. Some liability policies cover tenant's liability, others only after an express extension. Damage to your own contents falls under the home contents cover. When you apply, ask explicitly how these two relate to each other in the policy being proposed.
