In brief

Few makes are modified after delivery as often. A towbar, an LPG system, roof bars, an adapted driver's position or a complete conversion into a motorhome are more common on a Volkswagen than average. Every change to the vehicle has to be known both in the vehicle register and to your insurer.

This is also the make where the dividing line between private, lease and business use is thinnest. The same body runs as a family car, as a lease car and as a commercial vehicle. For the heavy commercial versions there is a page of its own about the Volkswagen Crafter.

What works in your favour with this make is the availability of parts and the density of the repair network: repairs can therefore usually be arranged more quickly than with rarer makes. That changes nothing about the exclusions for wear and mechanical defects.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and engine. Within the same model range, power and weight determine which rating group the car falls into.
  • List price with factory options. Comfort features, navigation and wheels ordered from the factory count in the value used for the calculation.
  • Nature of use. Private use, commuting, leasing or business use leads to a different premium and sometimes a different type of policy.
  • Fittings installed. A towbar, LPG system or conversion changes the risk profile and has to have been declared.
  • Annual mileage. The number of kilometres a year declared, which is compared with the odometer reading when there is a claim.
  • Cover, excess and where the car is kept. The type of cover, the excess chosen and the place where the car stands at night.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Towbar, LPG system and roof bars

A towbar or LPG system fitted afterwards must be entered in the vehicle register and declared to the insurer. With an LPG system that is all the more important, because it changes the fire risk. An undeclared installation can cost you cover on a fire claim under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Roof bars, bike racks and the load on them are not themselves part of the own-damage cover.

From commercial van to motorhome

If a Transporter or Crafter is converted into a camper, not only the interior changes but also the vehicle category on the registration. As long as that change has not been carried through and declared to the insurer, you are driving with a policy that does not match the actual vehicle. The fit-out, the furniture and the camping equipment also fall outside an ordinary car insurance policy.

Leasing, company use and no-claims years

If you drive a lease car for years, you usually build up no no-claims years on that car for a policy of your own. If you later move to a car in your own name, you start at the bottom unless you produce a statement from the leasing company setting out your claims history. Request that statement before the lease contract ends. Afterwards it is hard to obtain.

Reporting a claim and the accident statement form

Report a claim as soon as reasonably possible: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires that, and late notification can cost you a payment where the insurer is thereby prejudiced. Complete the European accident statement form at the scene and do not sign an admission of fault; establishing liability is for the insurers. Always note the registration numbers and the details of witnesses.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to declare a towbar fitted afterwards?

Yes. The towbar should appear in the vehicle register and your insurer should know about it. The towbar itself is usually insured within the accessories limit. What you tow with it is not: damage to the trailer or caravan itself calls for its own insurance, while damage you cause to other people with it falls under the third-party liability cover.

Do I build up no-claims years with a lease car?

Usually not for a policy of your own, because the insurance runs through the leasing company. So before the end of the contract, request a written statement about your claims history. Many insurers accept that statement as the basis for a more favourable starting step when you insure a car yourself afterwards. Without that paper you start at the bottom.

Is my LPG system insured as well?

Only if the installation appears on the registration, was fitted by an approved firm and has been declared to the insurer. An undeclared installation changes the fire risk on which the premium is based and can lead to a refusal when there is a claim. Ask for the installation certificate and keep it with your policy schedule.

I have converted my van into a camper; what now?

Have the vehicle category on the registration changed and report the conversion to your insurer. After that the vehicle belongs on motorhome insurance instead of a light commercial vehicle policy. The permanent fit-out can be insured there up to an agreed amount; loose camping equipment and household items fall outside it in principle.
