Business van insurance by make and model
Two vans with the same new price can differ by tens of per cent in premium. That difference lies in theft figures and repair costs, not in the badge on the grille.

In brief
Insurers classify vans on the basis of their own statistics. Two factors do most of the work: how often a model is stolen and what an average repair costs. A popular medium-sized van with a high residual value ranks high in the theft figures, and it is precisely those models that are given a security requirement: an approved alarm or tracking system as a condition for own-damage cover, not as a discount. If that system is missing or was not switched on, the theft claim is not covered.
On top of that, the trim level more heavily than the make. A long, high version with a separate tail lift, a cooling unit or a racking wall is more expensive to repair and more prone to damage when manoeuvring than the short version of the same model. Always declare the bodywork separately; anything not declared falls under a low standard limit for accessories in the event of a total loss and is not paid for. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to give correct information at application about everything relevant to the assessment.
With electric vans a third element comes into play: the battery. It represents a large part of the value, is vulnerable to damage from underneath and calls for a specialist repairer. Check whether the battery is insured, what applies with a leased battery and whether charging cables and the charging point fall within the cover. See the electric van and, for comparing makes in general, van insurance by make.

What to look out for
Four points on which make and specification influence the cover.
Security is a condition, not a discount
For models with high theft figures the insurer requires an approved alarm or vehicle tracking system, often combined with a subscription to a monitoring centre. If the system does not work, the subscription has not been paid or the tracking system has been switched off, theft cover lapses. Keep the installation certificates and check the subscriptions each year.
Parts and repair times
Some models have long delivery times for body panels or electronics. That does not affect the cover but it does affect your business: a van waiting six weeks for a part costs turnover. So ask about the duration and the category of the replacement transport; an ordinary hire car without a fit-out will not get your engineer to the customer with his tools.
What is in the van stays outside the policy
Whatever the make, a motor policy insures the vehicle and not the contents. Tools, machines, laptops and stock fall outside it and call for separate cover; see tools insurance or the business contents insurance. Virtually all those policies contain an overnight exclusion for theft from a vehicle not kept in a locked space.
Commercial registration and private mileage
If the van has a commercial registration and also goes home with someone, declare it. Insurers rate private kilometres differently from business kilometres, and the tax side stands apart from that. See a van with a commercial registration; with several vans, a fleet arrangement into view.
What does your premium depend on?
- Make, model and specification: length, height and engine each produce their own rate
- How prone the model is to theft: determines whether a security requirement is imposed
- List price including the body conversion: tail lift, refrigeration and fit-out declared separately
- Drivetrain: electric calls for a separate assessment of the battery
- Number and age of the drivers: changing staff increase the risk
- Region and storage: theft figures differ widely by area
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability + fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Fire in the engine compartment while the van is parked outside your premises | Yes | Yes |
| Your driver reverses into a concrete post on a building site | No | Yes |
| The tail lift is bent against a loading dock at a customer's site | No | Provided that |
| The battery of your electric van is damaged by a knock against a kerb | No | Provided that |
| Theft of tools left in the van overnight on the street | No | No |
| Damage to the hired trailer behind the van | No | No |
Third-party, fire and theft pays for fire, storm and theft of the vehicle; anything you cause yourself and anything travelling loose falls outside it.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Why is my van more expensive than my colleague's of the same make?
Because insurers calculate on specification, not on make. Length, height, engine power, bodywork and the exact type number determine the tariff group. On top of that come your region, your drivers and your claims history. Two vans of the same make can therefore fall into different groups, even with a comparable new price.
Is the battery of an electric van insured as well?
With a battery you have bought it usually is, as part of the vehicle, but the conditions vary where ageing and loss of capacity are concerned. The latter is wear and is never covered. If you hire or lease the battery separately, check who is the owner when there is damage and who submits the claim. Have this recorded in writing before delivery.
Does signwriting count towards the sum insured?
Only if you declare it separately. Advertising lettering and full-colour wrapping represent real value and have to be reapplied after bodywork damage. Without a separate entry it falls under the standard limit for accessories and you are paid a fraction. Keep the invoice for the lettering with your policy.
Does it matter whether I buy a new or a used van?
Yes, for the type of cover. With a new van, a purchase price or replacement value as new arrangement makes sense during the first years. After that, market value takes over. With a van of seven years or older, comprehensive cover gains you little, because in the event of a total loss you receive the market value and not the price of a comparable replacement.
