Car insurance for a Range Rover

In brief

With a car in this segment, acceptance turns on three points: the list price, the susceptibility to theft and the repair costs. For vehicles above a certain value, insurers virtually always set a security requirement, which is included as a clause on the policy schedule. Usually this means a certified alarm system combined with a vehicle tracking system with a subscription and a monitoring centre.

That clause is not a formality but a condition of cover. If the car is stolen while the system was not switched on, had not been inspected periodically or the subscription had expired, there is no theft cover. The same applies where keys have been left in or near the car. With keyless entry that calls for extra care: keep the key shielded, because a relay theft leaves no signs of forced entry and that leads to argument about how it happened.

Own damage is in principle paid on the basis of the market value. Many policies apply, for the first years, a a purchase-value or replacement-value-as-new arrangement, followed by a depreciation scale. That period differs from insurer to insurer and on expensive models is often shorter than on mid-range cars. Article 7:960 DCC provides that a payment may not put you in a clearly better position; nothing is paid above the loss actually suffered. See also comprehensive cover.

What to look out for

Four points that on this model are more often decisive than the difference in premium between two providers.

Security is a condition, not a discount

Have the required security class set out literally on the policy schedule and keep the installation and inspection certificate. On a theft claim, insurers ask for evidence that the system was active and had been inspected. An expired subscription to the tracking system is one of the most common reasons for a refusal.

Purchase-price scheme: note the term and the exceptions

The scheme usually applies only where the car was bought new or nearly new, and often only for the first owner. Imported cars, commercial registrations and tuned versions are regularly excluded or settled on market value. Ask for the exact scale before you sign, because once the term has expired the difference bites hard.

Repair by a marque specialist

An aluminium body, air suspension and driver assistance systems call for brand-specific equipment and calibration after a repair. If you choose free choice of repairer instead of the insurer's repair network, a higher excess often applies or the right to a replacement vehicle lapses. If you want the repair done at the brand dealer, have that recorded in advance.

Use, storage and accessories

Where the car stands at night, whether it is used for business and whether it is driven off the metalled road are all acceptance questions. Off-road trips and track use fall outside the cover. Accessories and aftermarket wheels are insured only up to an amount stated in the policy conditions; above that you have to declare them separately.

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price and trim level: the engine and specification determine the repair costs
  • Year of manufacture and market value: determines whether a value scheme still applies
  • Security level: a certified alarm and a tracker with a subscription
  • Postcode and where the vehicle is kept: a garage or closed site counts differently from the public road
  • No-claims years: in this segment they weigh more heavily because of the amount of the claim
  • Type of cover and excess: a separate, higher excess often applies for theft

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why is the premium higher than for an equally expensive saloon?

Two reasons. Insurers class large SUVs of this make as susceptible to theft, therefore require heavier security and build a higher theft element into the premium. In addition, repair costs are higher because of aluminium body parts, air suspension and the calibration of driver assistance systems after a repair. Both factors feed through into the own-damage premium, not into the third-party liability element.

What security is required?

That differs from insurer to insurer and from value class to value class. As a rule it means a certified alarm system, supplemented by a vehicle tracking system with a running subscription to a monitoring centre. Have the required class put on the policy schedule and keep the installer's certificate. Without that evidence the insurer can rely on the clause in the event of theft.

May I choose my own repairer?

You may, but it has consequences. Repair within the insurer's network usually gives a lower or waived excess and a replacement vehicle. If you choose outside the network, for example at the brand dealer, the full excess often applies. If you want brand repair as standard, choose a policy that expressly allows it and have it recorded.

What happens on a theft as regards the keys?

The insurer asks for all the keys belonging to the vehicle. If you cannot produce one, an investigation into how it happened follows and the claim can be refused. Report the theft to the police and the insurer at once; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report it as soon as you are reasonably aware of it. Leaving keys in or on the car is excluded.
