Rallying and your insurance

Driving in a rally means taking part in a speed competition. On travel, personal accident and motor policies that is one of the firmest exclusions there is.

In brief

Insurers draw one sharp distinction: is it a speed or not. A special stage in which the time counts is a speed competition and falls under the exclusion. A touring run, treasure hunt or regularity run without any speed element is normally included by many insurers.

The exclusion works on several policies at once. Your car insurance excludes taking part in competitions and training for them, for own damage and usually for the occupants as well. Your personal accident and travel insurance excludes speed competitions, and that applies to the co-driver or navigator as well.

On a closed course, moreover, the WAM does not apply as it does on the public road: Article 2 of the WAM ties the insurance obligation to traffic on the road. For damage during a stage you then depend on the cover taken out by the organiser.

What is covered in a rally?

Three policies are involved: motor, personal accident and travel.

Motor

Own damage and liability

Taking part in competitions is excluded as standard.

  • Training and test runs too
  • Damage to your own car not covered
  • Separate race or rally cover needed
Occupants

Driver and navigator

The co-driver falls under the same exclusion.

  • Check personal accident cover in advance
  • A one-off passenger run counts as well
  • Age and experience are taken into account
Travel

Rallying abroad

Medical costs after a crash are rarely covered.

  • A speed competition is excluded
  • Consider repatriation separately
  • Note the emergency assistance number in advance

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that decide whether anything is paid after a crash.

Speed competitions sit alongside mountaineering and air sports in the exclusions

Travel and personal accident policies generally exclude speed competitions and preparation for them , together with mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports and diving below your certified depth. As soon as the clock decides who wins, the drive falls into that first category. Even if you are not driving to win.

The WAM works differently on a closed course

The insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) is tied to taking part in traffic on the road. On a closed stage or circuit your third-party liability cover therefore often does not apply. Damage to spectators, officials or other competitors then runs through the organiser’s cover; ask in advance exactly what that arranges.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of trip — touring, regularity or speed
  • Public road or closed course — this decides which policy applies
  • Experience and licence — a competition licence from the governing body
  • Value of the car — mainly for own-damage cover
  • Destination — the Netherlands, Europe or beyond
  • Sums insured — mainly for injury to the occupants

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is a rally covered on my motor insurance?

Almost never. Taking part in competitions and training for them is excluded as standard, for own damage and usually for occupants cover as well. Separate rally cover is needed for timed stages.

Does that apply to a treasure hunt too?

Generally not. A touring run or treasure hunt without timing is not a speed competition and is normally included by many insurers. Report the event in advance all the same, particularly if there is a classification attached to it.

Is my navigator insured?

Under the same exclusion as the driver. Taking part in a timed stage is excluded for both occupants on personal accident and travel insurance. A one-off passenger run falls under it as well.

Who pays for third-party damage during a stage?

On a closed course the WAM cover usually does not apply, so the organiser’s insurance is the one that responds. Ask before the start what cover there is and up to what amount.

Are you driving a rally?

Have it established before the start which policy applies; we put your entry to the insurers that accept this.
