Compare quad, trike and MP3 insurance

Quads, trikes and three-wheelers such as the Piaggio MP3 sit between a car and a motorcycle. That makes acceptance idiosyncratic: not every insurer takes them, and off-road use is excluded practically everywhere.

In brief

A registered quad, trike or three-wheeler must have third-party liability cover, like any other motor vehicle. Which licence you need depends on the vehicle classification on the registration document.

Alongside third-party liability you can choose third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive cover. The own-damage premium is relatively high, because these vehicles roll over more often and parts are expensive.

Practically all policies exclude off-road use. If you ride away from the public road, on a motocross site or on the beach, that calls for separate cover or cannot be insured at all.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your moped insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price and year of manufacture
  • Vehicle classification: according to the registration document
  • Age and driving experience of the driver
  • No-claims years
  • Storage and security
  • Cover and excess chosen

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Look at the registration document first

The vehicle classification determines which licence you need and whether a helmet is compulsory. If you assume wrongly, you ride without entitlement, and cover then falls away.

Off-road use is excluded

A quad that also goes off-road is not covered by an ordinary policy as soon as it leaves the public road. Ask about specific off-road cover.

Limited acceptance

By no means every insurer accepts quads and trikes, certainly not with young riders. Comparing pays off more here than on an ordinary car.

Modifications and accessories

A modified exhaust, different wheels or a tow bar must be reported. Modifications that have not been reported are a reason to refuse payment.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Which driving licence do I need?

That depends on the classification on the registration document. Some three-wheelers can be ridden on a category B licence, others call for category A. Check this before you take to the road.

Is a helmet compulsory?

On vehicles classified as motorcycles or mopeds, yes. On vehicles with an enclosed cabin or a car classification, no. The registration document is decisive.

May I take my quad off-road?

Not under an ordinary policy. Off-road use is excluded practically everywhere. For that there is separate cover, or you have to turn to a specialist insurer.

Do I build up no-claims years?

Yes, and these can often be transferred to a car or motorcycle. Ask about it when you switch.

Why does not every insurer accept my quad?

These vehicles have an unusual claims pattern and higher repair costs. As a result, only part of the market has a rate for them.

Is an MP3 a scooter or a motorcycle?

In law that depends on the engine capacity and the classification. An MP3 up to 125 cc may be ridden on a category B licence subject to conditions; heavier versions call for category A. Here too the registration document is decisive.
