Insuring a 500 cc quad

A 500 cc quad is rarely just something to ride: attachments hang off it, and it is precisely those attachments that determine what is insured and what is not.

In brief

In this class the quad is often used as a working tool: with a winch, a blade, a box or a spraying kit. Those parts are not included in the declared value and are not insured unless declared separately.

The risk also shifts. A quad working the ground, a crop or a site can cause damage to property that is not yours, and that is liability and not motor damage. The question of which policy carries it belongs in the application.

The use you probably have in mind is also the use most often excluded: off-road, beach and dunes fall outside an ordinary policy, whatever the power.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value including the extension. A winch, blade or spraying kit counts only if you have declared it with its value.
  • Purpose of use. A working tool on a yard, recreational road use or a combination. That determines the risk.
  • Engine power and weight. In this class, decisive for the number of insurers still willing to quote.
  • Excess on own-damage cover. With higher repair costs, a higher excess brings the premium down noticeably.
  • Theft prevention. A lock, ground anchor or a locked barn; at this value the insurer sets requirements.
  • Valuation. On a version with many attachments, a recorded value prevents argument in the event of a total loss.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Declare attachments separately, with their value

A winch, snow blade, load box, spraying kit or a set of off-road tyres is not part of the standard specification and therefore does not count automatically. Without a declaration, the insurer pays for the bare quad after a theft or a total loss. Send the purchase invoices with the application and have the combined value recorded on the policy. While you are at it, also check that the attachments fitted do not exceed the permitted mass of the vehicle.

Damage to what you are working on is not motor damage

If you break a drainage pipe, damage someone else's crop or strike a cable, the issue is liability under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you are working on property in your care, you also run into the care, custody and control exclusion, which excludes damage to property in your charge. Discuss in advance which policy carries this; the motor cover certainly does not.

Off-road use, the beach and training days fall outside it

Riding away from the public road is excluded under practically every quad policy, and that applies to a motocross site, a dune area and the beach as well. If you take part in a race, a skill trial or an organised training day, Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code comes into it as well, allowing the insurer to refuse damage caused by recklessness. Separate day cover through the organiser is then the only route.

Repair costs mount up quickly in this class

Heavier quads have more expensive drive trains and more often need parts that have to come from abroad. That lengthens the repair time and increases the chance that an insurer will decide on a total loss even where the damage is limited. Have a quad with many attachments or an unusual specification valued and record the value on the policy, or the insurer will determine the market value itself in the event of a total loss.

Limited acceptance at higher power outputs

Not every insurer accepts quad bikes in this class, certainly not with young riders.

Check the registration certificate, not the brochure

The vehicle classification on the registration certificate determines which driving licence you need and whether a helmet is compulsory — not the engine capacity in itself. A wrong assumption means driving without the proper entitlement, and cover then lapses, including for the damage you cause to someone else.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my winch or snow blade included in the policy?

Only if you declared it separately with its value. Attachments are not part of the standard specification and therefore do not count automatically towards the sum insured. Send the purchase invoices with the application and have the total value recorded on the policy. Without that declaration the insurer pays for the bare quad after a theft.

May I take a 500 cc quad onto the beach or into the dunes?

Not under an ordinary policy. Riding away from the public road is excluded practically everywhere, and that applies to motocross sites, dune areas and the beach as well. For organised training or race days the organiser sometimes offers separate day cover; arrange that in advance and do not rely on your own policy.

Who pays for damage to the land I am working on?

That is liability under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code and not motor damage. Your quad policy does not cover it. If you are working on property in your care, the care, custody and control exclusion also comes into play, excluding damage to property in your charge. Discuss in advance which liability cover carries this risk.

How is the value of my quad determined?

Without an agreement in advance, on the basis of the market value at the time of the loss. On a version with many attachments or an unusual specification that rarely does justice to what you have put into it. In that case have the vehicle valued and record the agreed value on the policy.
