Car insurance for the Ferrari

With a Ferrari the hardest question is not the value but the use: as soon as the car goes onto a circuit or takes part in a timed run, own-damage cover falls away.

In brief

This make is, more than any other, actually used for what it was built for. Track days, instruction days, club events and touring runs come with ownership. Practically every Dutch car policy excludes taking part in competitions, speed trials and driving on a circuit, even where it is a private instruction day with no classification. Anyone wanting to do that needs separate track day cover. Without it you pay for damage to your own car yourself.

The technology plays a part as well. Carbon-ceramic brake discs, a dry sump system and an automated transmission are not parts that any workshop will replace. Wear to those parts does not fall under the cover. Only damage from an external event does. That distinction is the one most often disputed in claims files on these cars, and it is the reason always to have the cause established by an assessor.

For establishing the value there is an a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. On older examples the documented history counts towards that value: the service book, the originality of the engine and transmission and any certification. Keep those papers away from the car, because in a theft or fire you would otherwise lose both the object and the proof of what it was worth in one go. See also our page on classic car insurance.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Engine configuration and power. A mid-mounted eight-cylinder is weighted differently from a twelve-cylinder in the nose.
  • Use on circuits or at events. Anyone doing track days needs separate cover. The standard rate assumes public roads only.
  • Agreed value and history. The recorded value and the evidence for it form the basis on which the own-damage premium is calculated.
  • Seasonal use and annual mileage. Driving between spring and autumn with a limited mileage allowance is weighted differently from year-round use.
  • Storage and security. A locked and secured place of storage is often a condition of acceptance with this make and not merely a discount.
  • Circle of drivers and experience. Age, driving experience with this power and the number of permitted drivers count towards the assessment.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Circuits and speed trials are excluded

The exclusion goes further than racing. A private track day, an instruction day with a coach and a run over a closed course usually fall under it too, whether or not times are taken. If you drive anyway, you lose not only own-damage cover for your own car, but damage to other users may also fall outside the cover. For such days arrange separate track day insurance and have it recorded in writing.

A touring run with a regularity trial is a borderline case

Classic touring runs and rallies on the public road are usually covered, as long as no speed is measured. As soon as a classification with times is attached, it moves into the category of a speed trial and therefore into the exclusion. Ask the organisers on what basis the run is held and put that to the insurer before you set off. This is one of the few points on which insurers will give a ruling in advance.

Wear to brakes and clutch is not damage

Carbon-ceramic discs and an automated clutch are expensive, but they are wearing parts. Replacing them is maintenance, even where the costs approach those of a claim. Only where a disc breaks or the transmission is damaged by a collision, fire or falling material does an insured event arise. A mechanical defect and its consequences remain excluded, even where there was nothing wrong with your driving style.

Documentation also determines the payout

On older examples the value is carried by provenance and originality. If the service history or the confirmation of original components is missing, the valuation works out lower and that is precisely what is argued about on a total loss. Have the report set out the specification, the main options and the condition, and revalue within the agreed period. If anything about the car changes, that must be reported under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

I am doing an instruction day on a circuit, not a competition. Am I covered then?

As a rule no. Most policies exclude driving on a circuit as such, regardless of whether times are taken or there is a classification. A private instruction day falls under it too. For such days there is separate track day cover taken out for each event. Always ask for written confirmation before the day itself, not afterwards.

And a classic touring run on the public road?

That is usually covered, provided it does not include a timed speed or regularity trial. The distinction insurers make is not the name of the event but whether the running is against the clock. Ask the organisers for the regulations and put them forward. That way you know in advance whether own-damage cover stands that day.

Are my carbon-ceramic brakes insured?

Only against damage from an external event, such as a collision or fire. Normal wear and replacement at the end of their life are maintenance and fall outside the cover, even where the costs are high. The same applies to the clutch. If the cause is in doubt, have an assessor look at it before any parts are removed.

How often do I need a new valuation?

A valuation report under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code has a period of validity recorded in the policy. If that period expires, you fall back on market value and lose precisely the certainty for which you had the report drawn up. Put the end date in your diary and have a fresh valuation done after a major restoration, an engine rebuild or a change in specification.
