Polestar insurance: the battery, charging and the repair network

Polestar is the Swedish electric marque that grew out of Volvo. With a fully electric car the risks shift: it is not the bodywork but the battery pack, the charging and the repair network that determine what the policy has to look like.

In brief

For the compulsory third-party liability cover the drivetrain makes no difference: it follows from Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and covers only damage you cause to someone else. The difference lies in the own-damage cover. The battery pack represents a considerable part of the value of an electric car and sits beneath the floor, so that damage to the underside — a collision with a kerb, a high speed bump or an object struck on the road — leads to a costly assessment sooner than with a car with a combustion engine.

With this marque, insurers also look at the repair options. Polestar works with a limited network of designated service points and with body structures for which not every repair firm is approved. That feeds through into how long a repair takes and into the question of whether your policy allows a free choice of repairer. Also ask how the insurer deals with replacement transport when a repair takes weeks.

The third point is charging. A charging cable is a popular target for thieves, a home charging point usually belongs not to the car but to the house, and damage arising during charging does not automatically fall under the motor policy. Go through these three points before you take out cover; they rarely appear on comparison pages but they do appear in the conditions.

Which cover suits a Polestar?

Three types of cover, with below them the situations that come up most often with an electric car.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.

  • Damage to other cars and injury
  • No cover for your own car
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Rarely appropriate for a young EV
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

As well as third-party liability, a fixed list of events: theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with animals.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Windscreen damage, including recalibration
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Most chosen

Comprehensive

Also damage to your own car caused by you or without a third party involved.

  • A single-vehicle collision and battery damage
  • Damage with no known other party
  • Often a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement
  • Charging cable sometimes named separately

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price: the basis for the premium class
  • Engine power and weight: electric drive weighs heavily
  • Repair costs for the model: battery and bodywork
  • Number of kilometres per year: more kilometres, higher premium
  • Postcode area: the risk of theft and damage
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

What makes the difference with a Polestar

Four points that are different with an electric car than with a car with a combustion engine.

Battery damage decides between repair and total loss

After a collision in which the battery pack may have been involved, a safety assessment follows. If the housing is damaged, a pack is rarely repaired but replaced — and that cost can run so high that the car is written off as an economic total loss while the bodywork still looks fine. So check whether the policy includes a a replacement-value-as-new or purchase-value arrangement and how long it runs. Also ask how the insurer deals with the compulsory quarantine storage that can apply after battery damage. Those costs are not covered under every policy.

The charging cable, charging point and the house

A charging cable is covered as an accessory under some policies, under others only when it has been declared on the application, and under others again theft of a cable plugged into the charging point falls outside cover. A home charging point on the front of the house is not part of the car: that belongs with the buildings insurance, or with the home contents insurance where it is not permanently fixed. Report the installation to your household insurer. If a fire arises through a defective installation, liability can arise under Article 6:174 of the Dutch Civil Code for the possessor of the building.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: loss of capacity and reduction in range through normal use — that is wear and tear and falls under the manufacturer's warranty, not under the insurance; mechanical, electronic and software faults without a collision, including the resulting damage; and damage during speed or skill trials and on a circuit, including at a private event. Damage through intent or recklessness is also excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, and damage caused by charging with unsound or unapproved equipment is regularly refused.

Business use and several drivers

Electric cars in this segment are often driven for business or under a lease arrangement. If the car is registered to a business, is also used privately or has more than one regular driver, report that when taking out the policy: the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code extends to use and to who the regular driver is. An incorrect declaration can cause the payout to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). If the car is on a private lease, first check what cover the lease contract already includes, so that you are not insured twice.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is an electric car more expensive to insure?

Often yes, but not because electric driving would be more dangerous. The reason lies in the list price and in the repair costs: the battery pack is expensive, the number of approved repair firms is smaller and repairs take longer. The difference between insurers is large in this segment, because not everyone applies the same repair arrangements and battery conditions.

Is the battery covered under own-damage cover?

Damage to the battery through a covered event, such as a collision, fire or theft, is covered under own-damage cover. What is not covered is the gradual loss of capacity through use and ageing. The manufacturer's warranty applies to that, and generally guarantees a minimum remaining capacity within a given period. Read those warranty terms alongside your policy, because together they determine what is left at your own expense.

Who pays for damage arising during charging?

That depends on the cause. If it lies in the car, it is a matter for the motor policy or the warranty. If the cause lies in the charging installation at the house, buildings insurance comes into play and possibly your liability as possessor of the building under Article 6:174 of the Dutch Civil Code. At a public charging point, the operator or the manufacturer is the party to address. Always have the installation carried out by an approved installer and keep the report.

May I choose my own repairer?

That differs by policy. Some insurers allow a free choice, others work with their own network and charge a higher excess when you have repairs done outside it. With an electric car that matters substantively: work on high-voltage systems may only be carried out by trained technicians at an approved firm. Ask about this before you take out cover and have the answer confirmed in writing.

What if the car has been imported?

Declare it on the application. With an imported example, the specification, software version and original list price can differ from the Dutch reference. That affects the premium, the assessment of value at claim time and sometimes the availability of warranty and servicing. Make sure the details on the registration document and on the policy match.

Request a quote without obligation using the registration number. We compare premiums and conditions alike, including battery and charging provisions.
