Husky sledding trips and your insurance

A guided husky tour rarely counts as a hazardous sport and is usually covered by your travel insurance. The points to watch are the dogs, the hired equipment and the distance to help.

In brief

Unlike mountaineering or air sports, a guided husky tour does not appear in most insurers' exclusions. Injury after a fall from the sled, a dog bite or hypothermia normally falls under ordinary travel and personal accident cover. The real risk is the distance to medical help in Lapland, Norway or Canada.

There are three other points to note. The sled and equipment you hire fall under the care, custody and control exclusion of your personal liability insurance (AVP), multi-day tours in remote areas are sometimes classed as an expedition, and a snowmobile included in the programme is a motor vehicle with its own insurance requirement.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is covered on a husky tour?

Three elements determine where you stand: yourself, the dogs and the equipment.

Yourself

Injury and cold

A guided day tour usually falls within ordinary cover.

  • Treatment and transport on the spot
  • Hypothermia and frostbite
  • Repatriation through the emergency assistance centre
The dogs

Bites and liability

The keeper of the animal is liable under Article 6:179 of the Dutch Civil Code.

  • Usually the operator, not you
  • Different if you drive the team yourself
  • Have a report drawn up
Equipment

Sled and equipment

Hired items are goods in your care.

  • Care, custody and control exclusion on the AVP
  • The deposit is your excess
  • Ask about the hire terms

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the activity: a guided tour is normal
  • Day tour or multi-day trip: remote overnight stays count
  • Destination. Lapland, Alaska or Greenland
  • Driving the team yourself or riding along: your own team demands more
  • Sums insured: mainly recovery and repatriation
  • Duration of the trip: short trip or long period

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that decide whether your policy pays after an incident along the way.

The sport is not the problem; the setting is

The standard exclusions — mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports, deep diving and speed contests: do not affect a husky tour. However, expeditions and tours in uninhabited areas may be excluded separately, as may travel to an area under a negative travel advisory. Sled dog races fall under the competition exclusion.

Hired equipment is not automatically insured

If you damage the sled or the harness, your personal liability insurance applies the care, custody and control exclusion for goods in your care. The operator sets that off against your deposit. If you ride a snowmobile yourself, that is a motor vehicle with its own insurance requirement (Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)).

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a husky tour a hazardous sport?

Usually not. Most insurers place a guided tour in the normal risk class, and it falls under ordinary travel cover. It is different for sled dog races and for multi-day expeditions in uninhabited areas. These are often listed separately in the conditions.

Who is liable if a dog bites me?

Under Article 6:179 of the Dutch Civil Code the keeper of the animal is liable, usually the operator. Your own personal liability insurance does not come into play. Have the incident recorded on the spot and keep the medical documents for your claim.

What if I damage the sled?

That is usually not covered. Hired equipment falls under the care, custody and control exclusion of your personal liability insurance. The hirer sets the damage off against your deposit. Ask in advance about the excess in the hire agreement.

What should I watch out for in Lapland?

The distance to a hospital. Transport from a remote camp often requires a snowmobile or a helicopter. Always call the emergency assistance centre first, so that they can arrange transport and a guarantee of payment before you incur costs yourself.

Planning a husky tour?

Before you leave, have it confirmed in writing what has been arranged for recovery in remote areas and for the hired equipment.
