Non-life insurance

These pay for the loss suffered: what you have actually lost. Think of buildings, home contents, motor, liability and business interruption cover.

The payment is never higher than the loss. You may not end up better off.

Fixed-sum insurance

These pay a fixed amount when an event occurs, regardless of the actual loss. Think of personal accident insurance or term life insurance.

That distinction is set out in Article 7:964 of the Dutch Civil Code and it matters: fixed-sum insurance does not replace liability cover.

Healthcare and income

The basic health insurance is compulsory, with voluntary supplementary packages.

With income it is about incapacity for work: for employees through the WIA and supplementary cover, for the self-employed through disability insurance (AOV).

Business

Liability in four forms — AVB, BAV, directors' and officers' and cyber: plus property and continuity: business contents, business interruption, machinery breakdown and transport.

Understanding insurance, without the small print

Policy wording is rarely easy reading. We explain what the terms actually mean, so you can judge for yourself what you need — and what you don't.
