Basic health insurance

Compulsory for everyone who lives or worksin the Netherlands. You choose the insurer yourself. The basic package is laid down by law and is the same everywhere.

The excess applies per year and has a statutory minimum. Supplementary insurance is voluntary.

Third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles

Compulsory under the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), for as long as a registration is in your name.

That also applies when the car is not used. If you are not driving for a while, you can suspend the registration the registration with the RDW. The obligation then lapses.

What else can be compulsory

Your mortgage lender almost always requires buildings insurance (opstalverzekering). Your client can require public and employers' liability insurance (AVB) with a minimum sum insured.

With a VvE there is an obligation to insure the building under Article 5:112 of the Dutch Civil Code. That rests on the association.

Some professional registers require professional indemnity insurance (BAV).

What is not compulsory but still counts

Personal liability insurance. A single injury claim can exceed your assets, because the loss is calculated over the whole of the victim's life.
