What counts as fraud

Declaring a loss as higher than it was. Including old damage in a new claim. Altering a purchase receipt. Deliberately withholding something when taking out cover.

Also small untruths count. Fifty euros extra on a claim is the same category as five thousand.

How it is detected

Insurers compare notifications with one another, look at patterns and check details against other sources. If there is any doubt, an investigation by a loss adjuster follows.

Photographs contain date and location data; invoices can be verified with the supplier.

The consequences

No payment and recovery of what has already been paid, plus the costs of the investigation.

Registration in the External Referral Register for up to eight years. All insurers consult that register; during that period you will hardly be able to get a policy anywhere.

Cancellation of all your current policies with that insurer, and in serious cases a report to the police.

If in doubt

If you are unsure about something to do with a loss or about what you have to report, ask. You can always ask a question; adjusting a claim afterwards is a problem.

Understanding insurance, without the small print

Policy wording is rarely easy reading. We explain what the terms actually mean, so you can judge for yourself what you need — and what you don't.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What counts as fraud?

Declaring a loss as higher than it was, including old damage or deliberately withholding something.

Does a small amount count too?

Yes; the size does not determine the seriousness, the intent does.

What are the consequences?

No payment, recovery of what was paid, registration for up to eight years and cancellation of your policies.

What is the EVR?

The External Referral Register that all insurers consult when assessing applications.

How long does an entry stay there?

Up to eight years, depending on the seriousness.

What do I do if I am in doubt?

Ask; you can always ask a question, correcting things afterwards is harder.
