Freestyle skiing and your insurance

Freestyle skiing takes place on the piste, but with jumps, rails and somersaults. Many insurers treat that as acrobatic skiing and exclude it from ordinary winter sports cover.

In brief

Freestyle skiing takes place in the snow park and the half-pipe: kickers, rails, boxes and rotations. The terrain is managed and marked, so unlike off-piste the risk lies not in avalanches but in the landing. Back, shoulder and head injuries occur more often in this discipline than in ordinary descents.

Insurers translate that in two ways. Some simply include the snow park in the winter sports module; others name freestyle skiing, jumps and halfpipe as an exclusion, so that you need additional cover. Competitions, the training for them and practice for payment fall outside almost everywhere. So ask in writing before departure what is included.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is covered with freestyle skiing?

Three things determine your cover: use of the park, the type of jumps and whether competition is involved.

In advance

Winter sports cover and an addition

Check whether the park is expressly stated in the conditions.

  • The winter sports module as a basis
  • The snow park sometimes named separately
  • Ask for written confirmation
In the park

Kickers, rails and pipe

The obstacles determine how the insurer classifies the sport.

  • Only during opening hours
  • No closed-off or closed lines
  • A helmet prescribed almost everywhere
In the event of injury

Head, back and transport

Call the emergency assistance centre before you incur any costs.

  • A guarantee of payment for the clinic
  • Adapted transport home
  • Keep invoices and the medical report

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the discipline: park, pipe or piste only
  • Recreational or in competition: competitions call for a tailored solution
  • Destination: the Alps or outside Europe
  • Duration of the trip: a single week or the whole season
  • Sums insured: above all for disability and transport
  • Age and experience: juniors in the park group or experienced

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether your policy pays after a hard landing.

Acrobatic skiing stands apart in the conditions

Many policies cover skiing on the piste but name freestyle skiing, jumps and halfpipe as an exception to it. Whether the park is included therefore depends not on the ski area but on your conditions. Declare the discipline when taking out the policy. The duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code rests with you, and an incomplete declaration can reduce the payment or cause it to fall away (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Outside the park and outside the hours, everything falls away

Home-made jumps beside the piste fall under off-piste and therefore under the mountain sports exclusion. Jumping in a closed-off or closed park is treated as reckless conduct, for which Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code gives no cover. Practice in a competitive setting or for payment is also excluded as standard. Damage to your own skis while in use moreover falls outside the luggage cover.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does the snow park fall under winter sports cover?

That differs by insurer. Some policies cover everything on the open piste, including the park; others name acrobatic skiing and the half-pipe separately as an exclusion. Read the conditions on this point and ask for written confirmation where needed.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Insurers rarely prescribe it in so many words, but park rules do. If you ignore the local rules and are injured, that can be treated as reckless conduct and put the payment under pressure.

Am I insured if I hit someone on a jump?

Your liability insurance covers injury you cause to someone else, under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. In a sport and game situation the threshold for liability is higher, because participants accept part of the risk from each other.

Are my skis and helmet insured?

Theft and transport damage are usually covered by the luggage section, with a limit per item. Breakage while actually skiing is usually excluded. For hired equipment the hirer's deposit arrangement applies, not your travel insurance.

Heading into the park?

Have it recorded before departure whether jumps and the half-pipe are included. We find out which insurer accepts that.
