In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. That applies even when an offer uses the word free. Interest-free credit exists, but the costs then sit somewhere else: in arrangement or management fees, in a higher purchase price, in a compulsory purchase, or in a discount you miss out on by paying immediately.

What does exist is deferred payment. A supplier who lets you pay later is in effect granting credit. That is usually built into the price. Guarantee schemes and subsidies are not free loans either: a guarantee reduces the risk for the lender, but you still owe the interest and the repayments.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance under AFM licence 12016589. Finance falls under a different licence category. We therefore do not offer credit here and do not act as an intermediary for it. We explain what to look out for and refer you to parties that do hold the licence.

Insurance never stands alone

A mortgage, loan or investment often touches your insurance too. We look at the bigger picture and point you to the right specialist whenever something falls outside insurance itself.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four places where the costs sit in a loan that calls itself free.

Zero per cent interest is not zero cost

Do not look at the interest rate but at the total amount you pay over the term, including arrangement commission, file, management and administration fees. For consumer credit all those items have to be included in the annual percentage rate of charge. For business credit that requirement does not always apply, so ask for a full breakdown of costs yourself.

The discount you miss out on is a price too

A supplier offering interest-free instalments will normally pass that financing on in the sale price. So always ask what the price is for immediate payment. If it is lower, you know the true cost of the deferral and can compare it with an ordinary loan from a lender.

Free money exists, but it is not called a loan

A subsidy does not have to be repaid, but it comes with conditions, a duty to account for it and sometimes a reclaim afterwards. A guarantee scheme is something else: it reduces the risk for the lender, after which you still pay interest and repayments. Anyone who confuses the two is counting themselves rich.

Note who is making the offer

If a party asks in advance for a deposit, file fees or a payment through an unusual channel, there is usually no loan. Check the provider and the intermediary in the AFM register and see whether they are affiliated to a complaints body. Without supervision you have nowhere to turn if there is a dispute.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Total costs over the term: add up interest, arrangement commission, management and administration fees
  • Price for immediate payment: the difference from the instalment price is the real price of the deferral
  • Compulsory purchase or tied selling: an offer that ties you to a subscription or a contract is not free
  • Penalty-free repayment: ask in advance what early repayment or refinancing costs
  • Security and guarantees: even with interest-free credit your private assets can be called upon
  • Licence and supervision: check the party in the AFM register before you share any data

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

How it works

  1. You ask for the total amountNot the interest rate but the sum of all payments makes offers comparable.
  2. You ask for the price for immediate paymentThe difference shows what the deferral really costs you.
  3. You check the providerLook up the name and licence number in the AFM's public register.
  4. We insure your businessLiability, buildings, contents and business interruption we do arrange.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does a free business loan exist?

Rarely. Interest-free credit does occur, but the costs then sit in arrangement and management fees, in the price of the product or in a discount you miss. Judge every offer on the total amount you pay over the term and compare that with the price for immediate payment. Please note: borrowing money costs money.

Does Finass Verzekert provide business loans?

No. Our AFM licence covers non-life insurance only; finance falls under a different licence category. We therefore do not offer credit here and do not act as an intermediary for it. For the insurance around your business, from liability to business interruption and fleet, you can come to us.

Is deferred payment from a supplier credit?

In effect it is: you are using your supplier's money. If the deferral runs longer than a short payment term, or if costs are attached to it, rules apply as well. Ask for the price for immediate payment and for the costs of paying late. Those can mount up considerably and are set out in the general terms and conditions.

Are subsidies or guarantee schemes a free loan?

No. A subsidy does not have to be repaid, but it comes with conditions and accounting afterwards. If you fail to comply it is reclaimed. A guarantee scheme only reduces the risk for the lender, so that an application is approved more readily. You simply pay interest and repayments on it, and sometimes a fee for the guarantee.

How do I recognise an unreliable offer?

By advance payment of a deposit or file fees, by the absence of a licence number or business address, by pressure to sign quickly and by contact that runs solely through chat. Always check the party in the AFM's public register and never share copies of identity documents before you have done so.

Your business risks with us?

We compare several insurers on premium and conditions and check whether the cover fits your activities.
