In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. A loan costs interest, commission and fees. For consumer credit the annual percentage rate (APR) brings those together in one figure that makes offers comparable. The monthly payment does not, because it falls of its own accord with a longer term. For business credit an APR is not compulsory: ask for the total cost of credit.

Finass Verzekert holds an AFM licence for non-life insuranceyourself. Credit falls under a different licence category: we do not provide loans, do not advise on them and do not act as intermediaries for them.

For a self-employed professional one point is decisive: with a sole trader business or general partnership there is no separation between private and business. You are liable for the debt with your private assets, and business credit can end up in your personal BKR registration. That carries through into later applications, for instance for a mortgage.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that weigh more heavily for a sole trader than for a private limited company.

Private and business run together

With a sole trader business or general partnership there is no legal entity standing between you and the creditor. If the business cannot pay, the claim is enforced against your private assets, including savings and in principle the equity in your home. With a general partnership, joint and several liability for your partners' debts is added. Weigh that up before you sign.

Compare on the price of the credit

A lower instalment almost always means a longer term and therefore more interest in total. Ask for all costs over the whole term, including the arrangement and commitment fees, and convert them to annual basis. Also ask whether early repayment is possible without penalty. With fluctuating turnover that freedom is often worth more than a small difference in rate.

Your income is the security

A self-employed person rarely has many assets that can be pledged. The financier leans on your turnover and cash flow. If you are off work long term through illness or an accident, that cash flow stops while the repayments continue. There is no employer continuing to pay wages and health insurance does not pay an income. A disability insurance or another form of income protection is therefore not a side issue.

A liability claim hits the same assets

As a sole trader you also carry clients' claims yourself. A mistake in your work leads to pure financial loss, which ordinary public and employers' liability insurance does not cover; for that professional indemnity is needed. Make sure your business activity on the policy covers all the work you actually do, and note exclusions such as fines and redoing your own work.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Total cost of credit: over the term, on an annual basis
  • Term: does it match the investment
  • Penalty-free repayment: room to manoeuvre with fluctuating turnover
  • Registration in your name: consequences for later applications
  • Legal form: sole trader, general partnership or private limited company
  • The provider's licence: check the AFM register

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does Finass Verzekert provide business loans to the self-employed?

No. Our AFM licence covers general insurance; credit falls under a different category. We do not provide loans, do not advise on them and do not act as intermediaries for them. We do arrange the insurance a self-employed person needs: liability, business contents and tools, company vehicle, legal expenses and income during disability.

Will a business loan appear on my BKR registration?

With a sole trader business or general partnership it can, because there is no separation between private and business. With a private limited company usually not, unless you co-sign or give a guarantee in a private capacity. Ask the provider in writing beforehand how it registers. A registration carries through into later applications for a mortgage or consumer credit.

Why does the term matter so much?

Because a longer term lowers the instalment but raises the total interest, and because you run the risk of still repaying something that has already been written off. Choose a term that matches the useful life of the investment and ask whether early repayment is possible without penalty. With fluctuating turnover that flexibility is often decisive.

What if I fall ill and cannot make the repayments?

The repayment obligation continues while your turnover stops. As a self-employed person you have no employer continuing to pay wages, and health insurance does not pay an income. Disability insurance or a comparable arrangement absorbs that. Note the waiting period, the end age and the definition of incapacity applied. Those determine what you actually receive.

Investment planned, cover not yet?

We look at liability, equipment and your income if you are unable to work.
