In brief

A car with a lot of power is not accepted by most standard insurers, and where it is, you run into conditions written for an average family car. The difference lies in three clauses: the determination of value, the use provision and the security requirement. Anyone who gets those three right has the essence of exclusive motor insurance. The rest follows from them.

In this segment the value is established through a valuation report from a recognised valuer. That way you agree the value in advance, instead of an assessor determining it after a claim. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prohibits an insured from being better off as a result of the payment, but a valid prior valuation is precisely the statutorily recognised way of avoiding that debate about value. Note the period of validity of the report: if it expires, you fall back on market value, at exactly the moment when a limited edition has risen in value.

The use provision is the point on which most claims founder. Taking part in competitions, speed trials, timed runs and track days is excluded as standard, including where it is a tuition or experience day and including where the circuit is open that day as a tourist route. If you want to take the car onto a circuit, separate temporary cover is needed for it. More about this segment is set out on exclusive car insurance and sports car insurance.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four provisions that count for more with a supercar than the size of the excess.

Security and storage clause

In this segment insurers almost always set requirements: an approved alarm system of a particular class, a tracking system and storage in a locked garage. That is a warranty clause, not advice. If the car was outside when it was stolen or the tracking system was not active, the insurer can refuse payment because a condition of cover had not been met.

Who may drive

With high power there is often a named driver clause: named drivers only, or drivers above a minimum age and with a minimum number of years of licence holding. If you let the car be driven by someone who does not meet that, there is no cover for own damage. This also arises when lending the car to a family member or leaving it with a garage that has no cover of its own.

Parts, repair times and diminution in value

Repair by a brand specialist with original parts takes time; delivery times of months are not unusual. So arrange replacement transport in a suitable class in advance. Also watch out for diminution in value after a claim: the difference in residual value of a car with a claims history is not covered under most policies, while in this segment it is substantial.

Several cars and limited use

If you only drive the supercar in season and also have an everyday car, report it. A low mileage and a second vehicle at the same address usually work in your favour. With several vehicles a car collection insurance can be more practical than separate policies.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value: the basis for the own-damage premium in this segment
  • Engine power: counts more heavily than with an ordinary passenger car
  • Annual mileage: limited use noticeably lowers the premium
  • Storage and security: a locked garage, alarm class and tracker
  • Circle of drivers: a closed driver clause reduces the rate
  • Claims history and driving experience: the number of years of licence holding counts separately

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a track day on a circuit covered?

No. Driving on a circuit falls under the exclusion for speed events and competitions, even without classification or timing. Some insurers offer separate cover for this that can be taken out by the day. Arrange that in advance; reporting afterwards that you were on the circuit is not an option, because the exclusion applies at the moment of the loss.

How often does a valuation report have to be renewed?

A prior valuation has a limited period of validity that is stated in the policy conditions. While that runs, the value is fixed and the assessor does not argue about it after a claim. Once the term has passed, the market value at the time of the loss applies again. Put the expiry date in your diary and have a fresh valuation done in good time.

What if the car is at a show or an event?

Storage and transport away from the usual location are not automatically covered. Transport by trailer or closed transporter falls under transport cover, not under the motor insurance. Report taking part in an exhibition or rally in advance, so that it is established whether it falls under the current policy or whether a temporary extension is needed.

What if I modify or tune the car?

Changes to the engine, exhaust, suspension or power are an increase in risk that you must report. If you do not, the insurer can rely on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Undeclared modifications are also usually not insured themselves; accessories and modifications often have a separate sub-limit that you have to have increased expressly.
