In brief

An insurance package is a policy on which several sections are placed: liability, buildings or business contents, business interruption, sickness absence, motor vehicles. The difference from separate policies does not lie in the description of cover for each individual section. That is often word for word the same as the standalone version. The difference lies at the edges: one declaration of activities, one claims history, one renewal date and one claims handler who sees the whole file.

There is a downside that is rarely mentioned. Because the package rests on one declaration, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code works across the whole package too. If you conceal something about your activities at the outset, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code in respect of every section affected by that information, not just the section where the loss falls. The same applies to cancellation after a claim: insurers usually cancel the package, not one part of it.

A package is therefore mainly worthwhile if your sections touch each other, care, custody and control, tenant's improvements, work after completion, staff road risk. If your risks are independent of one another, a package mainly buys you administrative convenience. We set the package structure alongside the separate policies you have now and show at which seams something genuinely connects in your situation.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number and type of sections. Each section has its own rate. The number of parts also determines the discount band.
  • Description of activities. One description works through into all sections and determines the risk class of the whole.
  • Turnover and payroll. The usual calculation basis for the liability and staff sections.
  • Sums insured per section. Rebuild value, business contents value and the claim limit are set separately.
  • Extensions chosen. Care, custody and control, tenant's improvements, glass or business interruption raise the premium of the section concerned.
  • Claims history and excess. A claim on one section is taken into account at renewal in the assessment of the whole package.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The seams, not the sections, are the argument

With separate policies, gaps arise at the transitions. Liability insurance excludes damage to property in your care; business contents insurance covers only your own property. What a client left with you for safekeeping falls exactly in between. In a package, a borderline case like that is identified at the survey and assigned to one section. That assignment is the work. The discount is secondary.

One declaration means getting the declaration right once

The description of activities on the policy schedule determines what is covered in every section. If you expand with a new service, a second location or installation work on site, that affects the liability section, the business contents section and the business interruption section at the same time. Report a change like that in writing. A package running on out-of-date information is no safer than separate policies; it is simply wrong on more points at once.

What a package does not solve

A package covers no more than the sum of its sections. Intent remains excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, motor vehicle damage stays outside the liability section, fines and administrative sanctions are never insurable, and loss that arose before the start date falls outside the cover. Late notification remains a problem too: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code applies per section and is not softened across the package.

A package discount does not make up for the wrong section

The discount rises with the number of parts, and that tempts you to include what you do not need. A section you never call on rarely earns back the discount it produces. Judge each part on its own: is the sum insured right, is the excess correct, and does this section cover a risk you actually run? Only then do you add up the discount.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I cancel one section without ending the whole package?

Usually yes, but it affects the discount band: if you drop below the number of parts your discount is based on, the premium of the remaining sections rises. So never cancel a part without asking for the new package premium. Where the insurer cancels after a claim, it usually concerns the entire package.

Does the duty of disclosure work differently for a package than for separate policies?

In essence no, but the reach is greater. You make one declaration that carries all the sections. If it turns out afterwards that the declaration was incorrect or incomplete, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code in respect of every section that would have been affected by the missing information: even if the loss falls in a completely different section.

Does a package also give me one claims handler?

With one insurer it does, and for related losses that is the practical advantage. A fire in your premises affects buildings, business contents, business interruption and possibly liability all at once. If that runs through one file, there is no discussion about which policy carries which part. With separate policies at different companies, that split has to be fought out first.

Is a package also suitable if I have no staff?

Then the staff section falls away and you are usually left with liability, business contents and possibly business interruption. With two or three sections the administrative advantage is small and the discount band is low. In that case we compare explicitly with separate policies, because a specialist standalone policy for one risk sometimes gives better conditions than the same section within a package.
