Family personal accident insurance through Klaverblad
With family personal accident insurance the question is rarely whether you are insured, but whether what happened is an accident according to the policy. That definition stands at the front of the conditions.

In brief
We act as an independent intermediary and approach several companies; Klaverblad is one of them. The choice follows from the conditions and from what you already have elsewhere, not from the name on the policy schedule.
Virtually every personal accident policy describes an accident as a sudden, unintended effect of external violence on the bodycausing injury that can be established directly by a doctor. Alongside that main rule there is a list of cases which strictly speaking do not meet it but are nevertheless brought within it: drowning, suffocation, frostbite, sunstroke, acute poisoning, wound infection and injury sustained in lawful self-defence or in an attempt at rescue. If such an extension is missing, there is no cover in that case. This list is therefore not a trimming but the part that sets policies apart.
What falls outside in any event is injury that gradual arises or that stems from an illness or condition. The consequences of a medical procedure also stay outside the cover, unless the procedure itself was needed because of a covered accident. Before you choose amounts, it is sensible to take stock of what is already running elsewhere: personal accident cover on the travel insurance, passenger cover on the car insurance or an arrangement through the employer. Fixed-sum policies pay alongside each other, but you are then paying premium several times over for partly the same risk.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare family personal accident insurance.
What to look out for
Four provisions that in practice decide whether a payment is made and to whom.
The definition is the first test
On every notification the insurer first looks at whether the event meets the description. Tripping and breaking a wrist fits; waking up with a torn shoulder tendon after a day of DIY generally does not, because the sudden effect from outside is missing. Record what happened in writing straight away, therefore, and have a doctor record the injury; reconstructing it afterwards works against you.
Extensions are named expressly
Compare the list of special cases between quotations. A policy that names sunstroke, frostbite and acute poisoning covers situations a stricter policy refuses. Check as well whether infection by germs after a covered accident and injury while helping someone else appear in it. These are the points where two policies with the same premium diverge.
Standard exclusions for sport and traffic
Generally outside the cover are taking part in speed contests, air sports such as parachuting and hang-gliding, combat and martial arts and sport for payment. An accident also falls outside if the driver was under the influence or held no valid licence, and if it happened while a criminal offence was being committed. What an insured person causes deliberately remains uninsured under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code .
Keep the beneficiary provision up to date
The death section pays to the beneficiary named on the policy. As standard that is often the spouse or partner, then the children, then the heirs. After a divorce, a remarriage or the death of a partner, that order no longer holds automatically. Amend the beneficiary provision in writing; the insurer follows what is recorded at the time and not what you meant.
What does your premium depend on?
- Sums insured per section — death and permanent disability separately
- Household composition — number of people included
- Sport and hobbies — higher-risk activities call for a clause
- Occupation of the insured — classification in a risk class
- Age — bears on the rate and the final age
- Extensions chosen — the list of special cases
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Does this count as an accident
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| You trip over a raised paving slab and break your hip | Yes | Yes |
| Your child gets into difficulty in the swimming pool and is left with permanent injury from the near-drowning | Provided that | Yes |
| You suffer sunstroke during a walking tour and are admitted to hospital | No | Yes |
| A cut while gardening becomes infected and the finger stays stiff | Provided that | Yes |
| After years of lifting your lower back is worn out and you can no longer work full time | No | No |
| A tick bite leads months later to permanent joint problems | No | Provided that |
This policy pays an amount agreed in advance; what you actually lose in income stands apart from it.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Is a heart attack at the wheel an accident?
The attack itself is not: it comes from within and is an illness. If a collision follows, the question is whether the injury was caused by that or by the attack. Many policies exclude injury arising from an illness, even where a collision follows. Read that provision before you sign, because the wording differs from company to company.
Are student children living away included?
That varies. Some policies keep children included for as long as they are studying and financially dependent; others stop when they are removed from the home address or at an age limit. Report a move to student accommodation, therefore, and have it confirmed in writing whether the child remains insured. Do not go by the practice on another policy in your package.
Does the policy pay even if someone else is liable?
Yes. This is fixed-sum insurance: the payment hangs on the fact that there was an accident, not on the question of fault. You can also pursue the liable party under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Whether the payment received counts in assessing those damages is a separate argument about the set-off of benefits under Article 6:100 DCC.
What do sections A and B mean?
Section A is the payment on death caused by an accident, section B the payment for permanent disability. Each has its own sum insured. For disability the amount is multiplied by a percentage from a fixed table for loss of function. Some policies also have a section for medical and dental costs or a daily allowance.
