What is paid out with comprehensive cover?
With comprehensive cover the payment depends on the age of your car and on the arrangement in your policy. That difference can run into thousands of euros.

In the first years
If you bought the car new, a replacement-value-as-new arrangementoften applies: if the car is written off or stolen, you receive the list price of a comparable new car.
If you bought it second-hand, there is the purchase-value arrangement: you get back what you paid for it yourself.
Both apply for a limited period, usually one to three years. That period differs widely from insurer to insurer and is rarely set out prominently in the quote.
After that
Payment is made on the basis of market value: what the car is worth at that moment according to a valuation or price guide.
With a classic or restored vehicle that does not do justice to reality. There, a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code fixes the value in advance.
What is deducted
Your excess, which applies per claim. For a glass repair it is often nil, and for a glass replacement lower than for other claims.
With an at-fault claim you also lose no-claims years, which works through in your premium for years. After a small loss, paying yourself can therefore be cheaper.
Where there is finance
If the outstanding finance is more than the market value, that difference is the residual debt and it is for your account. Ask about additional cover if that gap is large.
