In brief
Finass acts as an intermediary for several insurers; Unigarant is one of them. Which company suits you best follows from your situation and not from a preference decided in advance. For households that insure leisure vehicles as well as a car, it pays to look at those policies together. Not because a package is by definition cheaper, but because the covers overlap at some points and leave a gap at others.
The best-known example is the trailer. As long as it is coupled to the car, liability for damage caused with the trailer falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. As soon as the trailer is uncoupled and has come to a standstill, that cover stops. Damage to the trailer itself, and to the load in it, is not covered by the motor insurance in any event; own-damage cover of its own is needed for that. The same distinction applies to a caravan.
Also look at sections you may have twice. Breakdown assistance is often already included in a roadside assistance membership, legal expenses may already fall under a current legal expenses insurance, and luggage in the car can fall under both a travel policy and home contents cover. Duplicate cover does not produce a double payment: insurers divide the claim between them and meanwhile you pay two premiums.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.
What to look out for
Four points that arise as soon as you place more than one vehicle with the same party.
Trailer: coupled or not
The third-party liability cover on the car extends to a coupled trailer. If the trailer is parked separately and is blown against another car, that is no longer a motor claim. For the use and storage of a trailer or caravan you need a policy of its own. Also declare whether you have a towbar. That is an accessory falling under a sub-limit.
Winter storage and seasonal use
With caravans and motorhomes there are often conditions for the storage period: where the vehicle stands, whether the site is locked and whether the contents have been removed. If you do not comply when it is stolen, cover for that event falls away. For the car the same principle applies to a security clause: it is a condition, not a recommendation.
What is excluded under every version
Excluded are, among others letting to third parties, including hiring out your motorhome or caravan through a platform, paid passenger transport with the car, and taking part in races and speed trials. Damage caused by wear, frost or deferred maintenance also falls outside the cover, as does intent under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Territorial scope outside the Netherlands
For the car, the area on the green card applies. For a caravan or motorhome a different area or a separate limit on the length of a trip may apply. If you drive to a country outside the green card area, frontier insurance is needed. Also check whether the breakdown assistance applies both inside and outside the Netherlands. Those are regularly two separate modules.
What does your premium depend on?
- Number of policies in the package: a package discount can work through into every element
- List price and power output: the basis of the motor rating group
- No-claims years: apply only to the motor vehicle itself
- Storage address: counts heavily with a caravan, motorhome and trailer
- Modules chosen: breakdown assistance, legal expenses and occupant cover
- Excess: can be set separately for each policy
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| You reverse into the neighbours' fence | Yes | Yes |
| The coupled caravan hits a lamp post while you are parking | Yes | Yes |
| A shopping trolley damages your door in the car park | No | Yes |
| Your car is stolen from the drive at night | No | Yes |
| A stone-chip crack in the windscreen that you have repaired | No | Provided that |
| Theft of the laptop that was in the boot | No | No |
Between these two there is also third-party, fire and theft cover; which events fall under it differs from company to company.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Is my trailer covered by my car insurance?
Only for liability, and only while the trailer is coupled or has just been uncoupled and has not yet come to a standstill. Damage to the trailer itself and to the load is not covered. If you want to insure the trailer against theft or damage, separate trailer insurance is needed. Always declare the use of a towbar.
Do I get a package discount if I take out several policies?
Many companies use a scale under which the discount rises with the number of policies. Whether that works out cheaper on balance depends on the individual premiums elsewhere. A package with one expensive element can still be more expensive despite the discount. We work out both scenarios and also look at differences in conditions.
What happens if I hire out my motorhome?
Hire to third parties is almost always excluded on a private policy, including occasional hire through a sharing platform. If damage occurs during that hire, there is no cover and the insurer can also rely on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code because the use differs from what was declared. Separate products exist for hire.
Do I need breakdown assistance alongside my roadside assistance membership?
Usually not. If you already have a membership covering breakdowns at home and abroad, a second breakdown assistance module produces no extra payment. Do check the scope: some memberships apply only in the Netherlands or only to the vehicle and not to a coupled caravan. On that difference, an addition is sometimes worthwhile.
