In brief

Insurers and authorised agents often offer their motor insurance at two or three levels. A wider version such as XL rarely differs on the core — third-party liability, third-party fire and theft, and comprehensive cover work the same everywhere: but on the peripheral sections. That is where the gain lies, and that is also where the misunderstandings lie. So do not compare on the name of the version, but on what the conditions say for each section.

Four sections make the difference. The depreciation scheme determines how long your car is paid for on replacement value as new or purchase price after you buy it, and by what percentage per month that value falls afterwards. In a total loss that is the amount everything turns on. Windscreen damage differs in the excess for replacement and for repair. Replacement transport is sometimes standard, sometimes a separate module, and the class of the replacement car varies. And breakdown assistance is a separate section that you do not want twice alongside a roadside assistance membership.

A wider version is not always the sensible choice. With a car a few years old, the market value at some point approaches the level at which the own-damage premium plus the excess no longer measures up to the maximum payment. That decision point differs from car to car. We work it out for you. The explanation of the basic versions is on Third-party liability plus third-party, fire and theft and is comprehensive cover worth it.

What to look out for

Four questions you want answered about any wider version before you sign.

How long the purchase price arrangement runs

For a new or nearly new car, the term of the replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement is the most important provision in the whole policy. Look at the term, at the condition that you must be the first owner, and at what happens afterwards: a fixed depreciation percentage per month or a fall back to market value. With second ownership such an arrangement usually lapses entirely.

What replacement transport actually means

Note the duration, whether it also applies to theft and breakdown and not only to a collision, and the class of the replacement car. If you drive a large or electric car yourself, a compact hire car with no towbar or charging facility is not a solution. Replacement transport in a total loss almost always stops as soon as the claim is settled.

What falls outside even the widest version

An XL cover also excludes: wear, construction faults and deferred maintenance, damage caused by the wrong fuel put in the tank under many policies, loss of value after repair, and damage during hire or paid passenger transport. A wider version makes the cover broader, not limitless.

Accessories and modifications

Audio, navigation and security equipment not supplied from the factory falls under a separate sub-limit. The same goes for wheels, a towbar, roof box and a charging cable. If the value of your accessories is above that limit, have the amount increased expressly and keep purchase receipts; without evidence you will get no further than the standard limit if they are stolen. Undeclared modifications to the engine or suspension are excluded in any event, excluded, and the same goes for loose items you carry in the car.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version chosen: basic or extended, priced by section
  • Age of the car: determines whether a purchase price arrangement applies
  • Excess for own-damage cover: often arranged separately for glass damage
  • Modules included: breakdown assistance, legal expenses and occupant cover
  • Value of the accessories: above the sub-limit you pay a loading
  • No-claims years: the discount works through into all own-damage sections

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

A wider version says something about the peripheral sections, not about the form of cover: you choose that separately.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is an XL version the same as comprehensive cover?

No. Comprehensive cover is a form of cover and says something about which damage to your own car is covered. An XL or extended version is a package level and says something about the additional sections: the depreciation arrangement, replacement transport, glass damage and sometimes breakdown assistance. So you choose two things: the form of cover and the level at which the peripheral sections are set.

Can I change version later?

Moving up is usually possible from a date of change, and so is moving down, although with own-damage cover a minimum term sometimes applies. What matters is that the new cover only applies from the date of change: damage that occurred before then falls under the old version. So report a change you want before the moment you expect to need the wider cover.

Is a wider version worthwhile with an older car?

Often not. The maximum payment in a total loss is the market value, and that falls each year. As soon as the annual own-damage premium plus the excess approaches that market value, the decision is quickly made. With an older car, third-party liability with third-party, fire and theft is usually the wiser choice; theft, fire and glass damage then remain covered.

Does glass damage count towards my no-claims years?

Under most policies glass damage is treated as unrecoverable damage that does not affect the no-claims scale, provided you have the glass repaired or replaced in accordance with the conditions. With repair instead of replacement, the excess is often waived entirely. Check this policy by policy, because the treatment differs between companies and authorised agents.
