What is the cheapest car insurance?

The lowest premium is rarely the lowest cost. The difference lies in the conditions that only become visible at the moment you have a loss.

In brief

A low premium comes from somewhere. Usually from four directions at once: the way in which the value of your car is determined, the freedom you have in repair, the sub-limits for accessories and luggage, and the size of the excess. None of those four is at the front of the premium comparison site, while together they determine what is left after a collision.

Start with the valuation. Insurers pay for a new car for a certain period under a replacement-as-new or purchase-price arrangement; after that the market valueapplies. A cheap policy often has a shorter period or uses a steeper depreciation. If a three-year-old car is written off, that difference is greater than the premium saving over the whole term. Compare the arrangement behind the cover, therefore, and not the name of the cover.

The second point is the directed repairs. Many keenly priced policies pay in full if you go to an approved repairer and retain an additional excess if you choose your own garage. For a leased car or a car with a manufacturer's warranty that can be undesirable. Look too at what falls outside cover for glass damage, for a replacement vehicle and for assistance abroad. The sections available are set out on the hub page on car insurance.

Where a low premium pays off and where it does not

Four places in the conditions where the price difference comes from.

The excess applies per event

A high excess lowers the premium noticeably, but applies again to every own-damage claim. Two small losses in one year then cost twice the full amount. Watch out too for different amounts per section: for glass replacement, for young drivers and for theft there are often different excesses from one another.

Sub-limits for accessories and luggage

As standard, a limited amount of audio equipment, navigation, towbar, roof rack and charging cable is included. Anything above that you have to declare and have recorded. Personal belongings in the car usually fall entirely outside the motor policy and belong on a home contents insurance, often with a low limit for items away from the home.

Saving with incorrect details is no saving

A lower premium obtained through the wrong regular driver, too low a mileage declaration or undeclared business use will not stand. After a loss the insurer tests the application against Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and the payout can be reduced proportionately or lapse under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you drive for work, choose a business car insurance.

What stays outside cover at every price level

No policy, cheap or expensive, pays for wear, rust, a defective engine or deferred maintenance. Diminution in value after a proper repair, consequential loss such as lost income and traffic fines also remain at your own expense. Under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code a payout may never leave you better off than you were before the loss.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Level of the excess: the control with the quickest effect on the premium
  • Free choice of repairer: being directed to a network repairer brings the price down
  • Age and market value of the car: determines whether own-damage cover is still in proportion
  • Payment term: paying annually is usually cheaper than paying monthly
  • Accessories covered: above the standard amount a separate premium applies
  • Proven no-claims years: a statement of no-claims history from your previous policy earns a discount

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the cheapest policy always a third-party policy?

With an older car usually yes, because you then pay no premium for own-damage cover that ultimately pays out the market value. But work it out: if the car still represents a real value and you cannot afford to lose it in one go, third-party, fire and theft is often the wiser choice for a limited difference in premium.

Why does the premium differ so much between providers?

Every company weighs postcode, age, mileage and vehicle type in a model of its own, and applies its own claims policy on top. An insurer that is competitive on a mid-range car may be expensive for a van or a young driver. That is why we compare by profile and not against a fixed ranking.

Can I switch if I find a cheaper policy?

After the first contract year you can cancel on any day with most companies, at short notice. Make sure the new cover starts on the day the old one ends, with no gap in between. Ask for a statement of no-claims history as well, because that is how you demonstrably take your no-claims years with you to the new insurer.

What do I lose if I no longer insure glass damage?

Glass damage is included as standard in third-party, fire and theft and in comprehensive cover. If you take third-party only, you pay for repair or replacement yourself, whereas having a chip repaired can often be done without an excess and keeps the screen intact. Replacing a windscreen with camera and sensor technology behind the glass is considerably more expensive than a repair.
