Courtesy car · hire car · someone else's policy
Anyone who drives a Karoq is fairly regularly in another car: a courtesy car during servicing, a hire car on holiday or a relative's vehicle.

The Karoq is a family car that has to be able to keep going without interruption. If it goes to the garage or does not fit the job for once, you get into another vehicle. At that moment you are driving not under your own policy but under someone else's, and that changes who reports a claim, who bears the excess and what happens to your no-claims years.
The starting point is that the insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver. The car you are sitting in has to be insured. That is the essence of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). If you cause damage with a courtesy or hire car, the owner's policy pays the other party and that claim in principle costs their step, not yours.
There are two exceptions you should know about. Some car policies have a replacement vehicle arrangement under which your own cover comes along for as long as your Karoq is being repaired at an approved firm. And with hire cars the excess for own damage is governed by contract, not by insurance. What you pay there yourself stands apart from your car insurance.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
If you are given a car during servicing, you drive on that firm's motor trade policy. Ask in writing beforehand what cover it carries and how high the excess is; at many firms only third-party liability is insured and you bear own damage yourself. Also check whether your own policy has a replacement vehicle arrangement. If it comes along, the order in which parties are approached matters and you report the claim to both.
With a hire car, liability towards third parties is settled, but damage to the hired vehicle is governed by the hire contract. That states an excess you pay on every instance of damage, including a scratch or a tyre. It can usually be bought off for a surcharge. Check whether the underside, windows, tyres and returning the car with an empty tank are excepted, because that is where the bill arises.
If you borrow a relative's car, you are insured with it as long as you drive with permission and hold a valid licence. If you cause damage, it goes onto the owner's policy and costs their no-claims years. If that policy has a clause for young drivers or a restriction to named drivers, the payment can be reduced or the excess raised. Ask about that in advance.
Your own car policy does not cover the excess that a hire company or a garage charges you. Also excluded are: damage while driving without a valid licence, use by a driver not permitted under the hire contract, and the belongings you had in the borrowed vehicle. Anyone who causes damage intentionally or acts with conscious recklessness has no entitlement, under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
The other party is paid by the insurance running on that vehicle, because the cover follows the car. The damage to the courtesy car itself depends on the garage's cover and on what you signed in the user agreement. That often states an excess you bear yourself. Get those arrangements on paper before you leave.
Only if your policy has a replacement vehicle arrangement. That then usually applies for a limited number of days, for an equivalent vehicle and where the repair is done by an approved firm. If that provision is missing, you drive entirely under the policy of whoever supplied the car. Report a claim to both insurers; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires timely notification.
In principle no, because the claim falls on the owner's policy and their step drops. That makes lending less casual than it looks: agree in advance who pays the excess and who compensates for the drop. If you regularly drive someone else's car, you are meanwhile building up no no-claims years of your own.
That depends on what the buy-off excludes. Damage to the underside, roof, windows, tyres and the key often stays outside the arrangement, while that is precisely where most bills arise. Read which parts are excepted and photograph the vehicle when you collect and return it. Your own car insurance does not pay this excess.
