Insuring a Polestar

With a Polestar, a large part of the value sits in the battery pack under the floor, and that changes what happens after apparently minor damage.

In brief

A knock against a kerb, a bollard that goes unnoticed or an obstacle on the road can strike the casing of the battery pack. If there is any doubt about the integrity of that pack, it is not repaired at cell level but replaced in full. The repair estimate therefore jumps, without the outside of the car showing much damage, and the car ends up being assessed as a total losssooner than you would expect.

A second set of questions surrounds charging. The charging cable you carry is an accessory: declare it, or theft at a public charge point will not be covered. Damage to the charging port or to the car while charging falls under own-damage cover if there is a sudden, unforeseen event from outside. A charge point at your own home does not belong with the motor policy but with your buildings or home contents cover.

The third point is practical: the brand works with a limited number of appointed repairers. Transport, waiting time for parts and the calibration of cameras and radar together determine how long the repair takes. So check whether replacement transport is on the policy. See also electric car insurance for how this cover is structured.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Model and drivetrain. A single-motor version and a version with two driven axles differ in power and in risk.
  • List price. The value including declared options and accessories forms the basis for the own-damage premium.
  • Repair costs for the model. The replacement cost of the battery pack and the availability of parts both count.
  • Annual mileage. Electric cars are often driven for business and cover many miles; declare a realistic mileage band.
  • Storage and charging situation. Charging on your own driveway or in a garage is assessed differently from charging in the street as a matter of course.
  • No-claims years and excess. Your step combined with the excess you choose determines the final rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The battery pack determines how the claim ends

The pack sits in the floor and is vulnerable in an impact from the side or from below. If the casing is struck, an assessment follows in which the starting point is replacement and not repair. So report every contact with the ground, even without a warning on the screen: if you drive on and consequential damage occurs later, the insurer can argue that you increased the risk. If in doubt, have the car parked away from other vehicles.

Charging cable, charging port and charge point

The loose charging cable is one of the most frequently stolen parts on electric cars and is only insured as an accessory on the motor policy. Damage to the charging port caused by an insured event falls under own-damage cover. A port that fails through incorrect plugging in or through wear does not. Your own charge point on the wall or in the garage belongs with the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), while a portable charging unit is more likely to belong with the home contents insurance.

Appointed repairers and turnaround time

The repair network for this brand is limited and not every body shop is allowed to work on high-voltage systems. That means transport to a certified workshop, longer delivery times for parts and a separate calibration stage for the cameras and sensors. So look closely at the replacement transport module: at the maximum number of days and at the class of hire car, because a short term is quickly used up with this kind of repair.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: loss of battery capacity through normal ageing, which is dealt with under the manufacturer's arrangement; software faults and failed updates with no event from outside; standing still with a flat battery, which is breakdown assistance and not an own-damage claim; an undeclared charging cable; the charge point at your home; and damage caused by charging with unsuitable or faulty equipment. Wear to tyres, which occurs faster given the high weight, also falls outside it.

Repairs and parts

The limited repair network lengthens repair times; replacement transport therefore counts for more.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the battery pack covered?

Damage to the pack caused by an insured event, such as a collision, fire or striking an obstacle, falls under own-damage cover. Because the pack is replaced in full if there is any doubt, such a claim can be large. So report every contact with the ground, even where no message appears on the screen and the car continues to drive normally.

What if my battery delivers less capacity?

That is not an insurance matter. Gradual loss of capacity is normal ageing and falls under the manufacturer's arrangement, which sets a lower limit and a term for it. An insurer only pays out for a sudden event from outside. Keep the reports from battery checks, because they are needed if you rely on the manufacturer's arrangement.

Are my charging cable and charge point insured?

The loose charging cable only if you have declared it as an accessory on the motor policy; otherwise theft at a charge point is not covered. A permanently fitted charge point at your home or in the garage falls under the buildings insurance. A portable charging unit is more likely to belong with the home contents insurance. So check all three policies together.

May I choose my own repairer?

In reality the choice is limited, because only certified firms are allowed to work on the high-voltage system and have the manufacturer's data for calibration. Your policy also determines whether you are free to choose or must go to an approved network, and whether departing from it costs a higher excess. Settle this before the car is towed away, not afterwards.
