In brief

The situations resemble one another. You return from abroad and your basic health insurance cannot start until your registration with the local authority is complete. Your employment ends and the group expat policy stops while you are still on the spot. Your visa has been extended but the visitor policy has expired. Or your departure has been postponed and the old cover has already been cancelled. In all these cases an uninsured period arises that rarely lasts long but is entirely at your own expense.

The distinguishing feature is the short, gap-free term: by the day or by the month, with an exact start date. That also makes the policy strict. There is no room for anything already under way: complaints that existed before the start date, or for which treatment had already been arranged, fall outside cover, and Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code give the insurer the basis for that.

Arrange this in advance. Afterwards, once the period has passed or a complaint has already arisen, there is no product left that fits. See also the insurance for a temporary stay in the Netherlands.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of days to be bridged. The premium is calculated per day or per month over exactly the period between two covers.
  • Age. Even with a short term, age remains the most important basis for expected use of medical care.
  • Area of cover. The Netherlands only, Europe or worldwide, depending on where you are during the bridging period.
  • Excess. An excess per event keeps the premium low on cover aimed mainly at emergencies.
  • Number of people insured. A family returning or departing together is assessed and included person by person.
  • Repatriation and liability. Separate modules that are mainly worthwhile if you spend part of the bridging period abroad.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The gap is administrative, not factual

You live here again, but a health insurer will only accept you with a citizen service number and a registered address. Between arrival and the first day on which basic health insurance starts there are therefore often several days to weeks. During that period there is no cover at all and even emergency costs are entirely for your own account. A bridging policy covers precisely those days, provided you take it out before they begin.

What a bridging policy is not

It does not replace basic health insurance and is not an alternative for anyone who is liable to insure. Anyone living and working in the Netherlands must have a policy under the Health Insurance Act; private bridging cover alongside it does not release you from that obligation, and the CAK takes no account of what you have arranged yourself. It bridges only a period in which you are demonstrably not yet, or no longer, liable to insure.

What it does include

The core is acute medical care: emergency treatment, hospital admission, necessary medication and emergency dentistry. If you are still abroad, repatriation is often included. Liability and baggage are optional, which is practical for anyone between two homes, staying temporarily with family and with their contents in a storage unit.

Limits on the term

A maximum duration applies and the policy is not intended to grow into a permanent solution. It can usually be extended only a limited number of times. Cover does not extend to planned procedures, chronic care and ongoing medication, antenatal checks and childbirth, or care in countries not listed in the chosen area of cover. Once it has ended, you cannot take out a new policy for the same complaint.

Retroactive cover (prior risk)

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I take out cover retroactively?

No. A bridging policy must start before the period begins. Anything that has already arisen counts as an existing risk, which the insurer can invoke under Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you only come forward after something has happened, there is no cover, not even if you are willing to pay the premium for the whole period.

How long can I bridge for?

These policies have a maximum term and are intended for weeks to a few months, not for years. Extension is usually limited and sometimes involves fresh acceptance questions. If your situation lasts longer than expected, report it in good time so that you can switch to regular international cover before the bridging period ends.

Does this replace my basic health insurance?

No. As soon as you live and work in the Netherlands you are liable to insure and basic health insurance must be in place, whatever else you have. Bridging cover is intended solely for the period in which that obligation does not yet, or no longer, applies. Take out the basic health insurance as soon as you can and let the bridging cover end on that same day.

I am returning from abroad. When do I arrange this?

Before you travel to the Netherlands, not afterwards. By the time you arrive here, your foreign cover has usually already stopped and you cannot yet register with a health insurer. Work out the likely date on which basic health insurance will start, add some margin, and let the bridging cover begin on the day of arrival.
