In brief

Chevrolet has disappeared from the European market as a volume make, but the cars are still on the road. A Spark, Aveo, Cruze or Captiva is by now an older used car with a modest market value. There the question is simple and hard: does own-damage cover, after the excess, still outweigh the premium? Often the answer is that third-party, fire and theft covers the risks you cannot control yourself and nothing more.

The second group is the American import: Camaro, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban. There everything turns on the paperwork. Such a car has no Dutch price reference, the odometer reading comes from miles and the history lies in the United States. If the vehicle was damaged there or has a rebuilt status, that is information the insurer needs when the policy is taken out; Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code makes that a duty.

On the large pick-ups the vehicle category comes on top of that: above a certain permitted maximum mass it is no longer a passenger car, with consequences for the licence and the type of policy. For the sports car from the same stable, read Insuring a Corvette.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Origin: European model or American import. Determines whether there is a standard market value or whether a valuation is needed.
  • Vehicle category and permitted maximum mass. Passenger car, van or heavier. The registration determines which rate applies.
  • Market value or valued amount. The basis of calculation for the own-damage premium and for the question whether own-damage cover is still defensible.
  • Engine capacity, power and fuel. Large petrol engines and a fitted LPG installation are assessed separately.
  • Annual mileage and storage. An import driven only at weekends and kept in storage scores differently from daily street use.
  • Cover, excess and no-claims years. At a low market value the excess determines whether own-damage cover gains you anything.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

European Chevrolet: where own-damage cover stops being worthwhile

On a Spark, Aveo or Captiva ten years old or more, the market value is low and the excess relatively high. Parking damage then largely falls to you and a moderate collision leads straight to a write-off. Third-party, fire and theft does remain worthwhile: theft, fire, storm, hail and glass damage are things you cannot influence yourself. Have the tipping point reviewed each year rather than renewing the policy unchanged.

A pick-up is not automatically a passenger car

On the large American models, the permitted maximum mass on the registration document determines what you need. If it is above the limit for a category B licence, a heavier licence is required and the vehicle is assessed as a commercial vehicle with a different rate and different conditions. If you insure it as a passenger car while the registration says otherwise, that comes to light on the first claim.

Imports without a Dutch price reference

For an imported example there is no standard Dutch market value table. A valuation report from a recognised expert fixes the value in advance, which Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code makes binding. Have the report also state the documents of origin, the converted odometer reading and any American claims history. If you conceal a claims record or a rebuilt status, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Parts, LPG installation and what falls outside the cover

Parts often come from the United States, which lengthens the repair time while replacement transport has a maximum on most policies. Not covered are: the loss you suffer from being without a car for longer, wear and mechanical failure, and damage from an LPG installation fitted without certification. Use that does not match the registration category, such as carrying goods commercially with a pick-up insured as a passenger car, also falls outside it.

Repairs and parts

Parts often come from the US, with delivery times that considerably lengthen the repair time.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is own-damage cover worthwhile on a ten-year-old Chevrolet Spark or Aveo?

Rarely in full. Set the market value alongside the excess: if little is left after a claim, you are largely paying premium for a payout you will not reach anyway. Third-party, fire and theft usually does remain sensible, because theft, fire, storm and glass damage lie outside your influence and do not fall with the age of the car. Have the balance struck again each year.

How is a Silverado or Tahoe insured?

That follows from the registration document. If the vehicle is registered as a passenger car and the permitted maximum mass stays below the limit for a category B licence, a passenger car policy is appropriate. If it is above that, a heavier licence is needed and the vehicle belongs on a commercial vehicle or lorry insurance. Copy the registration details onto the application. The wrong category leads to argument after a claim.

Do I have to have an imported Chevrolet valued?

For own-damage cover it is strongly advisable. Without a valuation, a loss adjuster establishes the market value after the claim, and on a car that is barely traded here that assessment is arbitrary. A report from a recognised expert fixes the amount in advance under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. Watch the period of validity and have it renewed in good time.

The car was damaged in the United States. Do I have to declare that?

Yes. An earlier accident, a rebuilt status or a repair history is information on which the insurer bases its underwriting. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to declare it when the policy is taken out. If it only comes to light after a claim, the payment can be reduced or refused under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Simply supply the import documents and any history report.
