Windows in the home

Windows, door panes and glass frontages are fixed in place and belong to the buildings. On many buildings insurance policies glass is included as standard. On others it is a separate module.

Check whether glass appears on your policy schedule; replacing a large pane quickly runs to hundreds of euros.

If you rent

Glass insurance is then generally with the landlord, because it concerns the building. But the tenancy agreement may place it with you; read it through.

What you had installed yourself — a glass partition, a conservatory — is tenant's improvements and falls outside the landlord's policy.

Loose glass items

A glass tabletop, a mirror or a display cabinet is home contents. If it breaks in a mishap, it is only covered under comprehensive cover.

In a flat

The windows in the facade belong to the VvE; that insures the building. Glass inside your flat that you installed yourself is an owner's improvement.
