Is your phone covered by the home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering)?
At home your phone is home contents. As soon as it leaves the house that changes, and that is exactly where it gets broken.

At home
With fire, water damage or burglary in your home, your phone falls under the home contents insurance, just like the rest of your belongings.
If you drop it at home, that is only covered under comprehensive cover; extended home contents insurance does not cover your own mishaps.
Away from home
This is usually where it stops. Theft from your bag in the street or a broken screen in a cafe is not covered by most home contents policies.
Some policies include a limited extension for items away from home with a low sub-limit; check that before you rely on it.
The route that does work
A valuables insurance covers your phone on a comprehensive, worldwide basis, including drops and loss. For a handset worth more than a thousand euros that is a genuine option.
Pay attention to the excesses and on whether screen damage is separately restricted. That differs greatly from policy to policy.
What you can do yourself
Put your handset on an insurance that matches how you use it. If you are out and about all day, contents cover is of little use.
Independent, personal, sorted quickly
We compare your contents insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
