The Topolino also comes in an open version with a roll-back roof and doors without locks, and that changes the requirements an insurer sets for storage.

On a vehicle that cannot be fully locked, the whole theft and weather risk shifts to the place where it stands. A cabin without locks means that a theft from the vehicle leaves no signs of forced entry, and under most policies those signs are precisely the condition for payment. So leave nothing behind and assume that loose items are covered nowhere.
On this version, the storage question on the application form is no formality. If you state a locked garage while the vehicle stands in the street overnight, that departs from your duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and the insurer may reduce or refuse payment after a theft under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. The difference in premium is smaller than what that costs after a loss.
The Topolino is also driven mainly in season and stands unused for the rest of the year. On suspension of the registration and the insurance obligation, read more at the page on insuring a light quadricycle. For the general points to watch with electric vehicles, see the electric light quadricycle (brommobiel).
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Own-damage cover generally pays for theft from a vehicle only where forced entry can be shown. On an open version with a roll-back cover or doors without locks, that forced entry cannot by definition be shown. A bag, a phone holder or a coat that disappears from the cabin therefore falls outside the cover. Treat the vehicle as an open space: take everything with you and store loose accessories indoors.
Storm and hail damage comes under third party, fire and theft, but water running in because the roof was open is assessed as negligence and not as an unforeseen event. On an open version that distinction is sharp. Close the roof even for short stops, and have damp damage to the trim and electronics established straight away; mould and corrosion damage that develops gradually is insured nowhere.
If the vehicle stands unused over the winter season, the insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) continues for as long as the registration is in your name. You can have the registration suspended; you may then not use the public road. Bear in mind that fire and theft cover does not automatically continue while the vehicle is idle. Deep discharge of the battery through standing for months is also wear and is not insured.
Outside the cover are: items left behind in the open cabin; water damage because the roof or the sides were not closed; damage to the roll-back cover through wear, UV radiation or ageing; theft where the storage stated does not match reality; loss of capacity or deep discharge of the battery; and hiring out or shared use that is not on the policy.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
No. Loose items fall outside the vehicle cover, and on a version without lockable doors the signs of forced entry that insurers require are also missing. Home contents or travel insurance generally does not pay for theft from an unlocked space either. The practical conclusion is simple: leave nothing in the vehicle, not even briefly.
That is damage you could have prevented. An insurer assesses it as negligence and not as a sudden, unforeseen event. Hail and storm damage to a closed vehicle, by contrast, does come under third party, fire and theft. So close the roof even for short stops and report water damage straight away, before damp works through into the trim and electronics.
For as long as the registration is in your name, the insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) applies. If you do not want to pay a premium over the winter, you suspend the registration with the RDW and take the vehicle off the road. Note that fire and theft cover does not automatically continue during a suspension; ask your adviser which version your insurer offers for this.
Yes, on this vehicle that is the most important question on the form. If you state a locked storage room while the vehicle stands in the street, the insurer may reduce or refuse payment after a theft or act of vandalism under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. If your storage arrangements change during the term, report it to your adviser straight away.
