In brief

An ordinary home and contents policy works with standard norms: a value calculator for the contents, an address scan for the building and fixed sub-limits for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and special possessions. As soon as your home, art, jewellery or instruments clearly exceed those, that calculation no longer holds. A high net worth personal package therefore works with individually established amounts rather than with norms.

The difference lies in three things. First, the way value is established: an valuation report under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code fixes the value for an agreed period, so that any dispute about underinsurance or market value disappears when you claim. Second, the sub-limits: jewellery, art and collections appear separately on the policy instead of under a standard maximum. Third, cover away from the home, in transit and while travelling.

A high net worth package is not cover without exclusions. Wear, deferred maintenance, subsidence and loss of value remain outside the policy here too, and insurers more often set prevention requirements for alarms, safes and locks. If these are not met, the payout may lapse. See also the high net worth home package.

What a high net worth package is made up of

Three elements determine whether a high net worth package adds value in your situation.

The home

Buildings and contents on a valuation

The sum insured follows from a report, not from a value calculator.

  • Valuation in accordance with Article 7:960 DCC
  • No discussion about underinsurance
  • Room for unusual materials
  • Garden landscaping and outbuildings included
Valuables

Jewellery, art and collections

Special possessions are described separately on the policy.

  • Insured per item or per category
  • Covered away from the home as well
  • Cover in transit and while travelling
  • Often requirements for a safe or an alarm
Liability

Higher limits and legal expenses

Greater wealth calls for a higher sum insured per event.

  • Higher maximum per event
  • Domestic staff included
  • House guests and babysitting risk arranged
  • Legal expenses with broader cover abroad

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before taking out the policy.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amounts: buildings, contents and valuables
  • Nature of the items: art, jewellery or instruments
  • Security of the home: alarm, safe and locks
  • Postcode area: burglary, storm and water risk
  • Limits chosen: maximum per event
  • Excess and size of the package: bundling saves on the premium

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

What to look out for

Two points that determine whether the package does what you expect of it when you claim.

A valuation only works within its term

A valuation report drawn up by an expert binds the insurer under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code for the agreed period, usually three to six years. After that the binding effect lapses and you fall back on the ordinary way of establishing value, with all the disputes about underinsurance that brings. Put the end date in your diary and have art, jewellery and collections revalued in good time, certainly if the market has changed.

Prevention requirements are not advice but a condition

With higher sums insured, insurers often include warranty clauses: jewellery in a certified safe, a working alarm when you are away, or particular locks. If such a condition is not met, the insurer may refuse the payout. Here too, intent and recklessness excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), as are loss of value, wear, damage by insects or mould, and loss where you cannot state the circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

When is a high net worth package worthwhile?

As soon as your possessions exceed the standard norms. Think of a home with unusual materials or a high rebuild value, jewellery and art that exceed the sub-limit of an ordinary contents policy, or a liability risk for which the usual maximum per event is tight. If you stay within the norms, a high net worth package adds little.

Do I have to have everything valued?

Not everything. Insurers usually require a valuation for the building in the case of unusual properties and for individual items above a certain value, such as a painting, a watch or an instrument. For the remaining contents a value calculator is often still enough. Which threshold applies differs by insurer and is set out in the acceptance conditions.

Is jewellery insured away from home as well?

In a high net worth package, usually yes, including in transit and while staying abroad, often with a limited period per trip. Conditions do apply: loss without identifiable circumstances, leaving items in an unattended car or in checked baggage is often excluded or restricted. Read that passage in the conditions before you travel.

Does the cover lapse if I renovate or start letting the property?

Those situations change the risk and you must report them. On entering into the contract, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies. A breach can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 DCC). Letting, letting rooms, prolonged vacancy and running a business from home often fall outside the cover if not reported, in a high net worth package too.
