In brief

Anyone who buys their insurance separately buys four good products and gets three seams. Each policy describes its own cover and excludes what its drafter considers belongs elsewhere. That works until a loss touches two of them: care, custody and control (third-party property in your care), work after completion, digital outage without material damage and environmental damage are the classic places where two insurers point at each other and you are stuck in the middle.

A package solves that at source. The sections are built on one declaration of activities, turnover, wage bill and sums insured, and the exclusions of one section fit the cover of another. For related losses — a fire that affects the business contents, the stock, the turnover and liability all at once — there is one file, one loss adjuster and one excess instead of three.

Against that stand administrative consequences you need to know about. All sections get the same contract renewal date, which makes switching easier but also means that a cancellation affects the whole package. A package discount is usually tied to a minimum number of sections: if one falls away, the discount on the rest lapses. And the en bloc clause gives the insurer the right to adjust the premium and conditions for the whole portfolio. Which sections you need is set out on the page for SMEs.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The seams are the reason for a package

Care, custody and control, work after completion and outage without material damage are exactly the areas where separate policies talk past each other. With a package those boundaries are settled in one go: care, custody and control cover is tied to what the survey shows is actually on your premises belonging to others, and the cyber section picks up what the property policy excludes because nothing has been damaged. That is the advantage — not the discount.

One survey also means one place where a mistake works through

Because all sections rest on the same declaration, an inaccuracy spreads through the whole package. A turnover declaration that is too low affects both the liability and the business interruption premium; an unreported activity can lead to disputes in several sections. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to disclose everything relevant to underwriting when the contract is entered into. So go through the declaration every year and report changes as they occur.

What has not been applied for is not in a package either

A package is not all-embracing cover. Cyber, environmental damage, professional indemnity, legal expenses, machinery breakdown and group personal accident cover are separate sections that you have to choose actively. They do not appear on the policy schedule automatically because you have a package. Go through the policy schedule section by section and compare it with what you actually do; what is not on it is not covered.

Renewal date, discount and the en bloc clause belong together

The aligned renewal date makes an overall comparison possible, but it also ties the sections to one another. If you cancel one section, the discount scale on the rest can lapse, so that the saving turns out smaller than expected. In addition, virtually every package contains an en bloc clause allowing the insurer to revise the premium or conditions for a whole group of policyholders. Ask about the notice period you have in that case.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Composition of the sections — Which parts you include and how many there are determines both the base premium and the level of the package discount.
  • One joint risk declaration — Activities, turnover and wage bill are established once and work through into several sections at the same time.
  • Sums insured per section — Replacement value as new of the business contents, purchase value of the stock, gross profit and the liability limit each form their own building block in the premium.
  • Business interruption indemnity period — The period over which loss of turnover is paid must match your recovery time and delivery times; it weighs heavily in the total premium.
  • Joint excess — For related losses, one excess often applies instead of several; its level is a direct lever on the premium.
  • Contract term and renewal date — A multi-year contract with one renewal date usually gives a lower premium, but limits your room to move during the term.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is a package cheaper than separate policies?

Often yes, through the discount scale based on the number of sections, but that is not the main point. The real advantage lies in the fit: care, custody and control, work after completion and outage without material damage are the places where separate policies do not meet. With a package those boundaries are settled in one survey, so that no dispute between insurers arises at the claim.

Are cyber or environmental damage automatically in the package?

No. A package bundles only the sections you choose. Cyber, environmental damage, professional indemnity, legal expenses and machinery breakdown are separate parts you have to apply for actively. Go through your policy schedule section by section and set it against what you actually do; what is not on it is not insured, however complete the package may look.

What happens if I want to cancel one section?

The section lapses, but the discount scale on the package may drop as a result, so that the premium on the remaining parts rises. So always work out the saving at package level. All sections also share one contract renewal date; a cancellation with effect from that date affects the whole contract in principle, not one part.

What does the en bloc clause mean for me?

It gives the insurer the right to change the premium or conditions for a whole group of policyholders at once, without anything having changed in your own situation. Against that stands an option to cancel if you do not accept the change. When taking out the policy, ask how long that period is and how the insurer announces a change of this kind.
