Where things go wrong

A standard home contents policy applies a a maximum per category to jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections — often a few thousand euros for everything together.

With art and antiques the value is also tied to the individual item and cannot be derived from a list.

What does work

A valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code fixes the value in advance, so that no argument arises about it when there is a claim.

For collections that rise in value, periodic revaluation is needed; a valuation that is ten years old rarely does justice to the current value.

What else to look out for

Security requirements: at higher values an insurer asks for an alarm linked to a monitoring centre, and sometimes for a safe of a prescribed grade.

Climate: with art and wine, temperature and humidity control is an underwriting question and sometimes a policy clause.

What you keep up to date yourself

A an up-to-date inventory list with photographs and provenance documents. After a theft that is your evidence, and it helps with tracing items.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Why is an ordinary home contents policy not enough?

Because of the sub-limits per category, which are often far below the actual value.

What is a valuation worth?

It fixes the value in advance, so that no argument arises when there is a claim.

How often should I revalue?

Periodically; in a rising market an old valuation is quickly out of date.

What security is required?

At higher values an alarm linked to a monitoring centre and sometimes a safe.

Does climate play a part?

With art and wine it does; it can be a condition of acceptance.

What do I keep up to date myself?

An inventory list with photographs and provenance documents.
