In brief

Most arguments when claiming are not about the premium but about details that were no longer correct. A relocation changes the risk on a home contents or car insurance and therefore often the premium. A building work or an extension changes the rebuild value. Letting a room, starting a business at home, fitting solar panels, a child starting to drive the car: these are all changes the insurer wants to know about. Report them as soon as they arise, not only at renewal.

At renewal the insurer sends a new policy schedule or a renewal notice. Go through it on three points: the sum insured, the clauses and the premium. If the insurer changes the conditions or the premium to your disadvantage, almost every policy gives you the right to cancel the insurance. Which notice period goes with that is set out in your policy conditions.

Paying the premium is not an administrative detail. If you do not pay, a reminder with a payment period follows, and once that has expired the insurer can suspend the registrationthe cover. Damage arising in that period is not covered, even if you pay later. With car insurance there is the added point that the registration of the cover at the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) lapses and you are driving an uninsured vehicle.

What to look out for during the term

Four moments at which a policy quietly drifts away from reality.

Underinsurance creeps in

If your contents or your home have become worth more than the sum insured, the insurer pays proportionately: with a shortfall of a quarter, you also get a quarter less on a partial loss. A guarantee against underinsurance also lapses if the details it is based on are no longer correct. Go through the value after a refurbishment or a large purchase.

Changes that affect the cover

When you apply, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code, and during the term most policies provide that you have to report a change in risk. If you conceal one, the insurer can, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code, reduce or refuse the payment and end the policy. If you are unsure whether something is worth reporting, report it.

Cancel in the right order

Most private policies can be cancelled on any day after the first contract year with a short notice period. Only cancel once the new insurance has definitely been accepted, otherwise a period without cover arises. With car insurance we request your no-claims years from the old insurer, so that your no-claims discount step moves with you.

What we cannot change for you

An exclusion is not a matter for negotiation. Outside the cover as standard remain intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), damage caused by wear, deferred maintenance and design faults, and events that were already running before the policy started. Also, fines and penalty payments are not insurable, because they are a penalty and not compensation for loss.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Changed risk address: postcode and type of home count for home and car insurance
  • Revised sum insured: after a refurbishment or the purchase of valuables
  • Excess: a higher excess lowers the premium
  • Claims history on the policy: claims reported during the term count at renewal
  • Package discount: several policies with one insurer can make a difference
  • Payment term: paying annually is usually cheaper than paying monthly

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

From when does a change take effect?

In principle on the date you state, provided the insurer accepts the change. If you report a change retrospectively, the insurer can refuse it for the period that has already passed. Check on the new policy schedule that the start date, the sum insured and the clauses are correct, and report it straight away if they are not.

My premium is going up at renewal. Can I leave?

Almost every policy contains a variation provision allowing the insurer to adjust the premium and the conditions as at the renewal date. If the change is unfavourable to you, you may cancel the insurance within the period set out in your conditions. Let us compare first: sometimes the adjustment is market-wide and switching produces little.

What happens if I miss a premium payment?

You receive a reminder with a payment period. If you do not pay within that period, the insurer can suspend the cover. Damage arising after that is not insured, even if you clear the arrears later. The cover revives only on payment and usually not retrospectively. So get in touch before a deadline expires.

Can I transfer the administration of existing policies to Finass?

Usually yes. With a continuing authority, Finass becomes the point of contact at the insurer, without your policy having to be taken out again. Your cover, start date and accrued no-claims years remain unchanged. We then go through the file and report if a policy runs twice or no longer suits your situation.
