In brief

We assess your details and put the application to the insurer that suits your situation. In doing so we compare the offerings of more than thirty insurers on cover, exclusions and premium. If anything is missing, we will get in touch. If the assessment shows that a different type of cover fits better, we put that to you before anything is arranged. Exactly what we do is set out in the service guide.

An application is not yet insurance. There is only cover once the insurer has accepted the application, or once provisional cover has been granted in writing. If a loss occurs in the meantime, it is in principle not covered. For that reason, do not cancel an existing policy before the new one has been definitively accepted; otherwise you will be without cover for a period.

After acceptance you receive the policy schedule, the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart). Check those documents straight away for the start date, the sum insured, the excess and the clauses. For insurance concluded at a distance, private individuals generally have a fourteen-day cooling-off period. If anything is wrong, let us know within that period.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

What happens next

Four steps between your application and a policy that is actually of use to you when you claim.

Assessment and acceptance

The insurer tests the application against its acceptance policy: claims history, use, address, business activity or age, depending on the product. That may lead to acceptance, to acceptance with a clause or a higher excess, or to refusal. If an application is refused, we put it to another insurer.

Your duty of disclosure

Under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code you must answer the questions asked fully and correctly, including questions about earlier claims, cancellation by a previous insurer or a criminal record. If the insurer later discovers that something was withheld, it may reduce or refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Adding information now still costs nothing.

Provisional cover

If you need cover immediately, for example because you are collecting a car today or receiving the keys to business premises tomorrow, say so expressly. Provisional cover is possible for some products, is always in writing and has a limited duration and sometimes a narrower scope than the final policy.

Check the policy schedule

In most policies a clause on the policy schedule takes precedence over the specific conditions, and those in turn over the general conditions. A prevention clause about security, inspection or maintenance is therefore not a formality: if you do not comply with it, your payout may be reduced when you claim. You can read more about this under general terms and conditions.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen: wider cover means a higher premium
  • Sum insured: the maximum payout per event or per year
  • Excess: a higher excess lowers the premium
  • Risk profile: address, use, occupation or business activity
  • Claims history: previous claims count towards acceptance and premium
  • Payment term: paying annually is usually cheaper than paying monthly

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Am I insured already?

No, not on the basis of the application alone. Cover starts on the start date of the accepted policy, or earlier if we have confirmed provisional cover to you in writing. If you need cover sooner, tell us straight away and we will arrange it in advance. If you are unsure whether cover has started, assume that it has not and get in touch.

When will I hear from you?

Usually within a few working days. A standard application is dealt with more quickly than one for which the insurer needs additional information, such as a valuation report, an inspection report, a risk assessment or a claims history statement. As long as those documents are missing, the insurer cannot assess the application.

Can I cancel my old insurance now?

Wait until the new policy has been definitively accepted and you have the policy schedule. If you cancel earlier, you run the risk of a period without cover. As a rule we arrange the cancellation for you and align the start date with the end date of the old policy, so that there is not a single day in between.

I have had a loss in the meantime. What should I do?

Report it immediately, even if it is not yet clear which policy provides cover. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report the loss as soon as you are reasonably aware of it, and to do what is reasonably possible to limit further loss. If the old policy is still running, report it there; we will support the handling. Use the claims reporting page for this.
