How do you choose the right insurance?
Start with your situation and not with a comparison site. The right policy follows from the risks you actually run.

Start with the risk
What can you not carry yourself? That is the question that determines what you insure, not what is on offer.
Work it through: what would a scenario cost you and how likely is it? Rare and unaffordable you insure; frequent and affordable you carry yourself.
Then look at the conditions
The exclusions determine what you do not get, and that is where disappointment arises. Compare on those, not on the premium line.
Please note sub-limits per category, the excess and the clauses on your policy schedule — conditions you have to meet yourself.
Check the sums insured
With home contents at replacement value, for buildings at rebuild value, for liability on what could happen and not on your size.
A guarantee against underinsurance prevents a proportionately lower payout.
What you do after that
Review periodically. Cover that was once right does not automatically stay right; moving house, moving in together, refurbishment or a new car change your situation and sometimes your duty to disclose.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Where do I start?
With the question of what you cannot carry yourself.
What do I compare on?
On exclusions, sub-limits and clauses, not just on premium.
How do I determine my sum insured?
Contents at replacement value, buildings at rebuild value.
What is a clause?
A condition on your policy schedule that you have to meet yourself.
How often should I review my policies?
Every year, and whenever your situation changes.
What if my situation changes?
Disclose it; that is often one phone call and prevents problems when you claim.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| A storm lifts roof tiles and rain comes into the bedroom | Yes | Yes |
| You drop the television while hanging it on the wall | No | Yes |
| Your child knocks a mug of coffee over the laptop | No | Yes |
| Your laptop bag is stolen from the boot of your car | No | Provided that |
| A gutter blocked for years lets damp seep into the wall | No | No |
| There is mould in the bathroom because it was never ventilated | No | No |
Comprehensive cover mainly adds your own mishaps; what has developed slowly falls outside the cover under both forms.
