In brief

Start with the risk, not with the premium. Ask yourself which event you cannot absorb financially: a fire, a collision, injury you cause to someone else, or a long-running legal dispute. For that risk you choose a type of cover. For a car that is third-party liability, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive. For a home and its contents usually extended or all-risks. Only then do you compare premiums.

The application itself is a statement. You state what you are insuring, what it is worth, how you use it and which claims you have had in recent years. Under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code that statement has to be correct and complete. A criminal record within the period asked about also falls under it. The insurer then assesses whether it accepts the risk and on what conditions.

Once accepted, you receive the policy schedule, the conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart). The policy schedule determines what is insured: check the sums insured, the start date, the excess and any clauses about alarms, locks or prevention. If something is wrong, report it straight away. The steps at a glance

Three moments at which you make a choice or have to check something.

Step 1

Risk and type of cover

Decide what you cannot carry yourself and which form suits that.

  • What it costs you without insurance
  • Third-party, extended or all-risks
  • Setting a realistic sum insured
  • Matching the excess to your reserves
Step 2

Application and acceptance

You supply the information, the insurer assesses the risk.

  • Declaring your claims history in full
  • Reporting particulars such as letting
  • Sometimes a valuation, inspection or clause
  • Refusal or a different premium is possible
Step 3

Policy and switching

Check the documents and make sure no gap arises in the cover.

  • Reading the policy schedule and the conditions
  • Ending the old policy only after acceptance
  • Cooling-off period when buying at a distance
  • Reporting changes later on

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before taking out the policy.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen: limited, extended or comprehensive
  • Sums insured: sums insured and limits
  • Excess: higher excess, lower premium
  • Claims history: previous claims count
  • Postcode area: burglary, storm and water risk
  • Package and payment frequency: bundling and paying annually make a difference

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong when taking out cover

Two points that later make the difference between being paid and not being paid.

What you do not tell them, you do not insure

The application questions determine the contract. An earlier claim, letting or renting out rooms, a business at home, business use of a private car, a long period standing empty or a refurbishment are risk information. Breach of the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Where there is deliberate deception, the right to payment lapses in principle altogether.

Look beyond the premium

A lower premium almost always comes from somewhere: a higher excess, a more limited form of cover, lower sub-limits or the absence of guarantee against underinsurance. Note too the standard exclusions that appear in every policy: intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), wear, deferred maintenance and design faults, and damage that already existed or was foreseeable. Legal expenses cover also has a waiting period.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Which details do I need in order to take out cover?

Your personal details and address, details of the object to be insured such as the registration number, year of construction or rebuild value, the start date you want and your claims history for recent years. When switching, the policy details of your current insurer are useful, and for a car the statement of no-claims years. For unusual buildings or high values the insurer sometimes asks for a valuation report.

When does the cover start?

On the start date shown on the policy schedule. Sending an application is not yet cover: the insurer has to accept the risk first. When switching, make sure the new policy is settled before the old one ends, otherwise a period without cover arises. With a car that is extra risky, because you are then also in breach of Article 2 WAM.

Can I still cancel the insurance if I change my mind?

For non-life insurance concluded at a distance there is in principle a statutory cooling-off period within which you can cancel without giving a reason. The period is set out in your conditions. After that the notice period in the policy applies. Most non-life policies can be cancelled on any day after the first contract year, with a short notice period.

Is taking out cover with advice more expensive than arranging it yourself?

With us you pay no separate advice fee. We receive commission from the insurer, included in the premium. The difference is not in the price but in the service: with advice your wishes and needs are established and a check is made that the cover fits. With execution only you take out the cover yourself and carry that responsibility in full.
