A higher excess
- Often an amount you may choose yourself
- Sometimes a separate amount per category
- You then stop reporting small claims
- Weigh this against your own reserves
Premium · excess · limits
The lowest premium differs per household and per postcode. What can be pinpointed is where a low premium comes from and what you give up for it.

The premium for home contents insurance is calculated per household. It follows from the insured contents value, adjusted for type of home, floor area, postcode area, form of cover and excess. Insurers weigh those details differently, and the most favourable provider for a small flat is rarely the same as for a family home with a lot of equipment. That is why no name and no amount appear here.
A low premium is almost always a trade-off. When it comes to it it comes down to three things: a a higher excess, a a more limited form of cover — extended instead of comprehensive — and lower limits for jewellery, equipment and belongings away from home. A fourth, less visible one comes on top: the absence of a guarantee against underinsurance.
There are also savings with no downside: paying annually rather than monthly, bundling policies, and removing duplicate glass cover on the buildings and contents policies. What is not a saving: entering a lower sum insured than the contents value calculator indicates. That lowers the premium and shifts the risk to you.
Three levers push the premium down. Each of them shifts risk onto you.
A higher excess lowers the premium and raises your costs with every claim.
Extended cover pays for named events. Your own mishaps fall outside.
A cheap policy often has lower maximums per category.
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Fire, smoke and water damage to the home contents | Yes | Yes |
| Theft after forced entry to the home | Yes | Yes |
| Dropping a laptop or knocking over a vase yourself | No | Yes |
| Payment in full even if the sum insured is too low | Provided that | Provided that |
| Theft from a shed, cellar or communal area | Provided that | Provided that |
| Wear, vermin and gradually penetrating damp | No | No |
What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.
Saving is possible, but not every element lends itself to it.
The sum insured is the replacement value as new of your entire contents. If you estimate it yourself, you almost always end up too low; most households underestimate what a complete refurnishing costs. In the event of underinsurance, the insurer pays proportionately less, even for a modest claim. So complete the contents value calculator in full: the guarantee against underinsurance is usually tied to it.
Jewellery, watches, audiovisual equipment, computers, musical instruments and art are covered up to a a maximum amount per event. The same restriction often applies to contents in a shed, cellar, communal area or garden. A cheaper policy regularly has lower maximums on these points. If your value is above them, separate valuables cover with a valuation is needed; otherwise you receive no more than the limit.
The exclusions are much the same with almost every insurer. Not covered are wear, ageing and inherent defect, damage caused by vermin, moths, mould and gradually penetrating damp, and theft without signs of forced entry. Loss or mislaying is also not treated as damage, and building-related damage such as subsidence or deferred maintenance belongs to the buildings policy and is excluded there as well. Intent and recklessness fall away under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Two premiums are only comparable with the same sum insured, form of cover, excess and limits. Check whether the amounts include 21% insurance premium tax and policy charges. Also declare special circumstances such as letting a room, running a business from home or a long absence: the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies when the policy is taken out, and a breach can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
Because the answer differs per household. Insurers each weigh the sum insured, type of home, postcode and chosen limits differently. Naming one would be wrong for a large share of readers. A calculation on your own details takes a few minutes and does give a usable answer, including the effect of the excess and the form of cover.
You can, but it is the most expensive saving there is. With too low a sum, the insurer pays proportionately: if the sum is a third too low, you receive about a third less even for a small claim. The guarantee against underinsurance also lapses. Stick to the outcome of the contents value calculator.
Often it is. Extended cover pays for fire, smoke, storm, water, lightning and theft after forced entry. Comprehensive adds your own mishaps: a glass knocked over onto the laptop or a television that falls. With children or pets, that type of claim occurs more often. Weigh the extra premium against the excess that comes with it and against the value of your vulnerable belongings.
Because the sums insured differ. Buildings insurance works with the rebuild value of the whole building, and that is almost always higher than the replacement value as new of your belongings. The two policies also cover different things: buildings covers the building and everything fixed to it, contents covers what you take with you when you move.
Regularly yes, certainly with a policy that has been running for years and has been indexed several times. Compare on equal terms and check whether the new policy gives a guarantee against underinsurance and what limits apply to valuables. Have the start date follow on from the end date of the old policy, so that no day passes without cover.
