In brief

The question sounds simple, but there are several answers. If you measure by gross premium income, by number of policies or to total assets, the ranking comes out differently. It also differs by market: the largest party in health insurance is not the largest in general or life insurance. The largest Dutch insurance groups are usually taken to be Achmea, NN Group and a.s.r. In the health insurance market, Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, CZ and Menzis are the familiar names.

That ranking also shifts through mergers and acquisitions, and many well-known brand names belong to the same group. We therefore do not quote percentages: current figures are published by De Nederlandsche Bank and the Dutch Association of Insurers. For your own choice, the size of an insurer is rarely decisive.

What size does and does not tell you

Three ways of looking at an insurer, only one of which is about your policy.

The measure

How size is measured

Every measure produces a different winner.

  • Gross premium income per line of business
  • Number of policies or insured persons
  • Total assets of the group
  • Brand names often sit under a parent company
The limitation

What it does not predict

Size says nothing about your premium or your cover.

  • Rates differ by risk profile
  • Exclusions are unrelated to market share
  • Underwriting policy may even be stricter
  • Claims handling differs from case to case
In reality

What you do look at

The points that make the difference when you claim.

  • Sum insured and basis of valuation
  • Exclusions and limits
  • Guarantee against underinsurance
  • Excess per event

What an insurer means for you appears from its policy conditions and insurance card (verzekeringskaart), not from its market share.

Two points about this question

What market figures are worth to you, and what you can steer on instead.

Market figures are public, but they change

De Nederlandsche Bank publishes statistics on the insurance sector and insurers report their premium income in their annual reports. Those figures are reliable, but they shift through mergers, acquisitions and portfolio transfers. The market is also highly concentrated: several well-known brands belong to the same group, so that by switching you sometimes stay with the same risk carrier.

DNB statistics

Steer on conditions, not on size

At every insurer, large or small, the same exclusions remain: wear, deferred maintenance and inherent defect, war risks and nuclear reactions, and damage caused by intent or recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. The difference lies in the sums insured, the limits for special items and whether there is a guarantee against underinsurance. Compare those points before you look at the premium.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Nature of the risk: what and who you insure
  • Sum insured: rebuild or replacement value
  • Type of cover: limited, extended or comprehensive
  • Postcode area: burglary, storm and water risk
  • Excess: higher amount, lower premium
  • Acceptance policy: differs considerably from company to company

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Which insurer really is the largest?

That depends on the measure and the segment. The largest Dutch insurance groups are taken to be Achmea, NN Group and a.s.r. In the health insurance market, Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, CZ and Menzis are the big players. Because the balance shifts from year to year and from one line of business to another, we do not give a ranking with percentages.

Where do I find reliable market figures?

With De Nederlandsche Bank, which publishes statistics on the insurance sector, and with the Dutch Association of Insurers, which issues market figures each year. Premium income and results also appear in the groups' own annual reports. Figures from comparison sites are often older or relate to a different segment from the one you are looking for.

Is a large insurer safer?

All Dutch insurers have to meet European capital requirements and are subject to prudential supervision by De Nederlandsche Bank. Size in itself therefore gives no extra security. Unlike with savings, there is no guarantee scheme for general insurance, so it is sensible to look at the financial position of the risk carrier as well.

Am I better off insuring with a large or a small party?

That depends on your risk. Large companies work with fixed standard conditions and are keenly priced on common risks. Smaller or specialist insurers more often accept unusual situations, such as a thatched roof, a listed building or a classic car. So have your own situation put to the market rather than choosing on name.
