What exactly counts as buildings?
The main rule: everything permanently attached to the house. What you would take with you when moving is contents.

The building itself
Walls, roof, floors, frames, windows and doors. The foundations, the installations for water, gas and electricity, and the central heating system.
Also what you had built in: a kitchen, a bathroom, a glued-down floor, a run of fitted cupboards.
What goes with it
Outbuildings on the same plot: shed, garage, garden house, carport. A separate maximum often applies to these; check that it is adequate.
Boundary fences such as a fence or wall, and paving. For storm, the cover for these is sometimes limited.
Solar panels, heat pump and charging point: they raise the rebuild value and should have been declared.
Where the line lies
A detached fridge is contents; a built-in one is buildings. A click-fit flooring that is loose-laid is contents; a glued-down floor is buildings.
If in doubt: would you take it with you when you move? Then it is contents.
In a flat or a rented home
Then it changes. In a flat the VvE insures the building and what you installed yourself is owner's interest. With a rented home it is tenant's improvements; you include both on your home contents insurance.
Independent, personal, sorted quickly
We compare your buildings insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
