Glued or click-together

A glued vinyl floor is a permanent fixture and therefore belongs to the structure. A click-fit flooring laid loose on underlay strictly speaking is not, but insurers assess that differently.

Ask how your insurer sees it and have that recorded. With floors costing several thousand euros it is worth it.

In a flat

What you had laid yourself is owner's interest: it is fixed in place and therefore not contents, but the VvE policy usually covers only the structural condition.

Include it as a section on your home contents insurance, or check whether the VvE has arranged this collectively.

In a rented home

A floor you had laid as a tenant is tenant's improvements. Your landlord's policy does not cover it; include it on your home contents insurance.

Where things go wrong

With water damage from above, the floor is often the most expensive part of the loss. If it has not been declared anywhere, it falls between the policies.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your buildings insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a glued vinyl floor part of the structure?

In an owner-occupied home usually yes. It is a permanent fixture.

And a click-together floor?

That is laid loose; insurers assess it differently. Ask and have it recorded.

What about in a flat?

Then it is the owner's interest. The VvE policy usually only covers the shell of the building.

What if I rent?

Then it counts as tenant's improvements; include that on your home contents insurance.

Why does it matter?

With water damage the floor is often the most expensive item. Not declared anywhere means paying yourself.

How do I arrange it?

Declare the value as tenant's or owner's interest on your home contents insurance.
