Is my kitchen covered by the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering)?
In an owner-occupied home, yes. In a flat or a rented home it is different, and that difference costs tens of thousands of euros.

In a home you own
A fitted kitchen with fitted units, a worktop and built-in appliances is a permanent fixture and falls under the structure.
A detached fridge or cooker is contents.
In a flat
The building is insured through the VvE, but that policy usually covers only the structural condition as completed.
A kitchen you had installed yourself is owner's interest: it is fixed in place, so not contents, but the VvE does not cover it. Ask the board whether the VvE has arranged this collectively. If not, include it on your home contents insurance.
In a rented home
What you as a tenant had installed is tenant's improvements. Your landlord's policy covers the property as it was let, not what was added afterwards.
Why it matters
In a kitchen fire or a leak, the first question is which policy it falls under. If the kitchen has not been declared anywhere, it falls between two covers and you pay yourself — with a new kitchen, quickly tens of thousands of euros.
Independent, personal, sorted quickly
We compare your buildings insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Is my kitchen insured?
In an owner-occupied home, under the buildings cover. In a flat or rented home, not automatically.
What about in a flat?
Then it is the owner's interest. The VvE policy usually only covers the shell of the building.
What if I rent?
Then it counts as tenant's improvements; include that on your home contents insurance.
Are free-standing appliances contents?
Yes, a free-standing fridge or cooker is.
What does that cost if it is not recorded anywhere?
With a new kitchen, easily tens of thousands of euros that you bear yourself.
How do I arrange it?
As an owner's or tenant's interest section on your home contents insurance.
