Water damage: is that contents or buildings?
Water damage usually affects both: the property and what is inside it. That normally means two claims.

What falls under the buildings cover
Damage to the building: soaked walls and ceilings, a damaged ceiling, a damaged floor that is fixed in place, and the repair of these.
Also costs of tracing the leak: breaking open to find the leak and making good afterwards — usually fall under the buildings insurance.
What falls under the contents cover
Your belongings: furniture, appliances, clothing, and a floor that is laid loose. You report those to your contents insurer.
If you have both policies with the same company, it runs in one file; otherwise there are two claims.
What falls under neither
The cause itself. A burst pipe is not paid for. The consequential damage is. That distinction surprises people most.
Also gradual damage (a leak that went unnoticed for months, damp slowly rising) falls outside cover. What is insured is sudden damage.
Groundwater coming up through the floor is not covered anywhere. There is no standard cover for it.
Independent, personal, sorted quickly
We compare your buildings insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Does water damage fall under buildings or contents cover?
Usually both: the building under buildings cover, your belongings under contents cover.
Is the burst pipe itself covered?
No, not the cause; the resulting damage is.
Are the costs of tracing the leak covered?
Usually yes, under the buildings insurance, including making good.
What about gradual damage?
That falls outside; what is insured is sudden damage.
And groundwater?
That is not covered anywhere. There is no standard cover for it.
Do I have to report it twice?
With two insurers, yes. With the same company it runs in one file.
