Ski biking and your insurance

Skibocken means using a skibock: a seated device on short skis. The term does not appear in policy conditions, and that is precisely the problem.

In brief

Skibocken is a collective name for descending on a skibock: a frame with a saddle on one or two short skis, related to the skibob and the snowbike. It is not a widely practised sport and the name is used differently from region to region. The term appears in almost no policy conditions.

An insurer assesses not the name but the actual activity. So describe what you do: on which device, on which slope and at what speed. If you receive no confirmation, it remains uncertain whether this falls under winter sports or under an exclusion — and that uncertainty works against you when you claim.

What is covered in skibocken?

Without a recognised name for the sport, everything turns on the description you give in advance and the confirmation you get back.

Description

Describe the activity

Name the device, the terrain and the speed, not just the name of the sport.

  • Send a photograph or the model
  • Piste or open terrain
  • Competition or not
Confirmation

Get it in writing

A verbal assurance is hard to prove when you claim.

  • Confirmation by e-mail
  • Keep it with the policy
  • Even for one-off use
Fallback

If no cover is given

If the insurer refuses, only the basics remain.

  • Ordinary travel cover only
  • No mountain rescue in rough terrain
  • Costs for your own account

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that make the difference with an unfamiliar activity.

An unfamiliar name gives you no cover

If your activity does not appear in the conditions, at claim stage it is placed in the nearest category — and that usually means the exclusions: off-piste mountain sports, air sports, diving below a stated depth or speed contests. Have the classification recorded in advance rather than arguing about it afterwards.

The duty of disclosure works both ways

When taking out the policy you must answer the insurer’s questions in full (Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code); if you do not, it may reduce or refuse payment (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). An unfamiliar name for the sport does not release you from that duty: describe the device factually. Report a claim straight away (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Classification by the insurer — which category it chooses
  • Grounds — piste or open mountainside
  • Recreational or competitive — competition is ruled out
  • Destination — the Alps or further afield
  • Duration of the trip — a single week or a whole season
  • Your own or a hired craft — hire calls for equipment cover

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

My policy does not mention skibocken. Am I covered?

That is not certain. An insurer assesses the actual activity. Without notification in advance you run the risk that it places the device in an excluded category when you claim.

What do I put in my notification?

Describe the device, whether you stay on a prepared piste, whether you take part in competitions and whether you hire it. Ask for written confirmation and keep it with your policy.

Is this the same as skibobbing?

Related, not identical. The skibob is a recognised device with its own competition circuit; skibock is used more loosely. Feel free to refer to the skibob as a comparison in your notification.

And if the insurer refuses?

Then the activity falls outside cover and treatment, mountain rescue and repatriation are for your own account. Additional adventure cover with another insurer is then the alternative.

Are you going skibocken?

Have the activity assessed and recorded before you leave; we put the description to the insurers that accept this.
